To the inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty of his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans of India, these resources can open up new research per\u00adspec\u00adtives that have remained obstruct\u00aded by an exces\u00adsive fix\u00ada\u00adtion on British colo\u00adnial archives. At the same time, inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive research ques\u00adtions can be gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded for pur\u00adpos\u00ades of transna\u00adtion\u00adal his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson and for the his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal analy\u00adsis of \u201cglob\u00adal\u00adiza\u00adtion\u201d process\u00ades through an explo\u00adration of the mod\u00adern his\u00adto\u00adry of Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan entanglements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More\u00adover, the result\u00ading twofold widen\u00ading of research per\u00adspec\u00adtives cre\u00adates new chances for a more inten\u00adsive com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion and coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion between Indi\u00adan and Ger\u00adman tra\u00addi\u00adtions of his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal inquiry \u2013 tra\u00addi\u00adtions that have tak\u00aden cog\u00adnizance of each oth\u00ader, so far, only to a very lim\u00adit\u00aded extent. Through the fol\u00adlow\u00ading ini\u00adtia\u00adtives the long-term project \u201cMod\u00adern India in Ger\u00adman Archives\u201d (\u201cDas Mod\u00aderne Indi\u00aden in deutschen Archiv\u00aden\u201d, <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span>) aims to pro\u00adduce the nec\u00ades\u00adsary con\u00addi\u00adtions for this sub\u00adstan\u00adtial endeavour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly col\u00adlect in a sin\u00adgle data\u00adbase cat\u00ada\u00adlogue and key\u00adword infor\u00adma\u00adtion on hold\u00adings of Ger\u00adman archives on mod\u00adern India and the his\u00adto\u00adry of Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan entan\u00adgle\u00adments, from the estab\u00adlish\u00adment of the Dan\u00adish-Halle Mis\u00adsion in South India (1706) up to the end of the polit\u00adi\u00adcal divi\u00adsion of Ger\u00admany (1989\/90);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>make avail\u00adable this data\u00adbase to the inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty on a long-term basis as a \u201cgrow\u00ading\u201d and open dig\u00adi\u00adtal resource for the pur\u00adpose of locat\u00ading spe\u00adcif\u00adic archival material;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pro\u00advide the inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty as well as a wider pub\u00adlic with long-term access to a dig\u00adi\u00adtal archive guide, which will be derived from the data\u00adbase and suc\u00adces\u00adsive\u00adly expand\u00aded in order to present an overview of the full the\u00admat\u00adic range of rel\u00ade\u00advant collections;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>demon\u00adstrate the poten\u00adtial of Ger\u00adman archival resources for India-relat\u00aded stud\u00adies in exem\u00adplary pilot research projects and a cor\u00adre\u00adspond\u00ading pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion series. This will encour\u00adage a) a more intense uti\u00adliza\u00adtion of these archival hold\u00adings par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly by Ger\u00adman and Indi\u00adan his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans and b) the shap\u00ading of the nec\u00ades\u00adsary mul\u00adti\u00adlin\u00adguis\u00adtic and inter-region\u00adal qual\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion profiles;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>con\u00adtribute to a sus\u00adtained real\u00adiza\u00adtion of the goal that was for\u00admu\u00adlat\u00aded on a bilat\u00ader\u00adal work\u00adshop of the <span class=\"caps\">DFG<\/span> and the Indi\u00adan Coun\u00adcil for His\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal Research (<span class=\"caps\">ICHR<\/span>) in Novem\u00adber 2012, name\u00adly the inten\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion of Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan research co-oper\u00ada\u00adtion in the Human Sci\u00adences. The Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan \u201ctan\u00addem struc\u00adture\u201d accord\u00ading to which the pilot projects have been designed will serve as a key instru\u00adment to achieve this&nbsp;aim.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"project-goals\"><strong><a id=\"goals\"><\/a>Project Goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An impor\u00adtant goal of the long-term project \u201cMod\u00adern India in Ger\u00adman Archives\u201d (<span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span>) is to sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly record the con\u00adtents of Ger\u00adman archives on the his\u00adto\u00adry of mod\u00adern India and the Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan his\u00adto\u00adry of entan\u00adgle\u00adments between 1706 and 1989\/90 in a data\u00adbase and to make this data\u00adbase avail\u00adable to inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond this col\u00adlec\u00adtion of the rel\u00ade\u00advant hold\u00adings, their pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion in a dig\u00adi\u00adtal archive guide ensures that this archive data is pre\u00adsent\u00aded in a way that meets cur\u00adrent and future research needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These research needs are shaped by the his\u00adto\u00adri\u00ado\u00adgraph\u00adic ten\u00adden\u00adcy towards transna\u00adtion\u00adal and trans ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal per\u00adspec\u00adtives. The <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> project itself is an expres\u00adsion of this increas\u00ading open\u00ading of the his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal sci\u00adences: sources of Mod\u00adern India in Ger\u00adman archives, which so far had appeared as mar\u00adgin\u00adal to ear\u00adli\u00ader nation\u00adal \u2014 but also colo\u00adnial-his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal \u2014 con\u00adtain\u00ader per\u00adspec\u00adtives are only now becom\u00ading the focus of the inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion. Pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly, ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adri\u00adal\u00adly defined per\u00adspec\u00adtives, whether that of a Ger\u00adman nation\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adry or of a British-Indi\u00adan colo\u00adnial his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adog\u00adra\u00adphy, were unable to iden\u00adti\u00adfy source mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal, the sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcance of which could only be seen in con\u00adjunc\u00adtion with mate\u00adri\u00adals that had emerged from oth\u00ader ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transna\u00adtion\u00adal and trans-ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal per\u00adspec\u00adtives ini\u00adtial\u00adly focused on the his\u00adto\u00adry of trans\u00adfers or mutu\u00adal recep\u00adtion, i.e. they exam\u00adined bilat\u00ader\u00adal rela\u00adtions or trans\u00adfer axes that tran\u00adscend\u00aded the ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal frame\u00adwork of nation\u00adal or impe\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adogra\u00adphies. In the mean\u00adtime inter\u00addis\u00adci\u00adpli\u00adnary research approach\u00ades are large\u00adly anchored in the human\u00adi\u00adties, cul\u00adtur\u00adal and social his\u00adto\u00adry, but also in post\u00adcolo\u00adnial stud\u00adies, and Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan exchange rela\u00adtions are exam\u00adined less along trans\u00adfer axes than in larg\u00ader inter\u00adre\u00adli\u00adgious-his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the his\u00adto\u00adry of entan\u00adgle\u00adments is well estab\u00adlished in terms of con\u00adtent, the method\u00adolog\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00adse\u00adquences of this his\u00adto\u00adri\u00ado\u00adgraph\u00adic devel\u00adop\u00adment, how\u00adev\u00ader, seem to have been neglect\u00aded so far. If, for exam\u00adple, Indi\u00adan and Ger\u00adman his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal actors entered into com\u00adplex exchange rela\u00adtions that could not be reduced to bilat\u00ader\u00adal trans\u00adfer axes medi\u00adat\u00aded by ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal state insti\u00adtu\u00adtions, but were inte\u00adgrat\u00aded into exten\u00adsive transna\u00adtion\u00adal net\u00adworks, what does this mean for the order of archives and the struc\u00adtures of the archive? As a form of epis\u00adte\u00admo\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal pow\u00ader artic\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion from dif\u00adfer\u00adent per\u00adspec\u00adtives, the archive has become the sub\u00adject of intense philo\u00adsoph\u00adi\u00adcal and his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal reflec\u00adtion. The close con\u00adnec\u00adtion between the log\u00adic of the archive and the insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal log\u00adic of pow\u00ader appa\u00adra\u00adtus\u00ades, espe\u00adcial\u00adly of state (nation\u00adal or impe\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal) pow\u00ader appa\u00adra\u00adtus\u00ades, is now open. How\u00adev\u00ader, what con\u00adse\u00adquences does it have if, with\u00adin the frame\u00adwork of the <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> long-term project, we not only leave the con\u00adcep\u00adtu\u00adal con\u00adtain\u00aders of the ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal states with our research, but bring archival mate\u00adri\u00adals into a new rela\u00adtion\u00adship and in a cer\u00adtain way pro\u00adduce a new \u201cmeta-archive\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project intends to respond to these ques\u00adtions by first tak\u00ading the archives as sin\u00adgu\u00adlar, insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly and ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adri\u00adal\u00adly delim\u00adit\u00aded repos\u00adi\u00adto\u00adries in the pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion of the inven\u00adto\u00adries in the data\u00adbase and fol\u00adlow\u00ading their own log\u00adic.
