Introduction:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The Ger\u00adman Demo\u00adc\u00adra\u00adt\u00adic Repub\u00adlic (GDR<\/span>) was offi\u00adcial\u00adly rec\u00adog\u00adnized by the Indi\u00adan state in 1972. In the absence of offi\u00adcial diplo\u00admat\u00adic rela\u00adtions pri\u00ador to recog\u00adni\u00adtion, how\u00adev\u00ader, the Trade Rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtions, estab\u00adlished in 1956, became the \u2018offi\u00adcial mouth\u00adpiece\u2019 of the GDR<\/span> in India. Almost par\u00adal\u00adlel to the increas\u00ading role played by the Trade Rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtions in fur\u00adther\u00ading polit\u00adi\u00adcal, eco\u00adnom\u00adic and cul\u00adtur\u00adal rela\u00adtions between the two coun\u00adtries was the emer\u00adgence of numer\u00adous Indo-GDR Friend\u00adship Soci\u00adeties across dif\u00adfer\u00adent parts of India. In the field of cul\u00adtur\u00adal rela\u00adtions espe\u00adcial\u00adly, entan\u00adgle\u00adments came to be inten\u00adsi\u00adfied through a myr\u00adi\u00adad of media like the\u00adatre, art, film, doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtaries, music, radio etc. The diverse activ\u00adi\u00adties of the Friend\u00adship Soci\u00adeties, uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals, diplo\u00admats, the\u00adatre play\u00adwrights and film\u00admak\u00aders\u2013 with actors from both sides of the spec\u00adtrum\u2013 pro\u00adduced a vibrant atmos\u00adphere of entan\u00adgle\u00adments which were at the inter\u00adface of both polit\u00adi\u00adcal and cul\u00adtur\u00adal diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though these entan\u00adgle\u00adments have been researched indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly from var\u00adi\u00adous direc\u00adtions [1], and through the lens of mul\u00adti\u00adple tropes, they have rarely received sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adic aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic atten\u00adtion with\u00adin the ambit of an over\u00adar\u00adch\u00ading frame\u00adwork. This is espe\u00adcial\u00adly because his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adog\u00adra\u00adphy on the larg\u00ader sub\u00adject of India-GDR rela\u00adtions is also large\u00adly scat\u00adtered and scanty. This work\u00adshop seeks to unpack the domain of \u201cdoing\u201d cul\u00adtur\u00adal pol\u00adi\u00adtics by actors from India and the Ger\u00adman Demo\u00adc\u00adra\u00adt\u00adic Repub\u00adlic dur\u00ading the Cold War years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where\u00adas the Ger\u00adman term Kul\u00adtur\u00adpoli\u00adtik<\/em> sug\u00adgests the for\u00admal\u00adized ambit of state-led entan\u00adgle\u00adments and soft pow\u00ader, the pol\u00adi\u00adtics of cul\u00adture<\/em> reflects how such pol\u00adi\u00adtics of \u2018doing\u2019 cul\u00adture per\u00adco\u00adlates the every\u00adday life of pub\u00adlic sphere(s), where\u00adby entan\u00adgle\u00adments acquire their own after\u00adlives beyond the for\u00admalised sphere of state pol\u00adi\u00adtics. It will focus, on the one hand, on how the GDR<\/span> was re-pre\u00adsent\u00aded for an Indi\u00adan audi\u00adence and how India came to be pro\u00adject\u00aded and con\u00adsumed as an object of inter\u00adest in the GDR<\/span>. On the oth\u00ader, but more impor\u00adtant\u00adly so, it aims to trace the life tra\u00adjec\u00adto\u00adries of indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals, lit\u00ader\u00adary works and objects that were at the cusp of intense indi\u00advid\u00adual exchanges. Such his\u00adto\u00adries, embed\u00added in com\u00adplex rela\u00adtion\u00adships among actors from both the coun\u00adtries, also call for a read\u00ading beyond the lim\u00adit\u00aded and lim\u00adit\u00ading vocab\u00adu\u00adlary of \u201cpro\u00adpa\u00adgan\u00adda pol\u00adi\u00adtics\u201d. The work\u00adshop will look at mul\u00adti\u00adple sites of \u201cdoing cul\u00adture\u201d that active\u00adly con\u00adtributed to pro\u00adduc\u00ading an inter\u00adface between state-led cul\u00adtur\u00adal entan\u00adgle\u00adments, cul\u00adtur\u00adal diplo\u00adma\u00adcy, par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpa\u00adto\u00adry democ\u00adra\u00adcy and the pol\u00adi\u00adtics of resis\u00adtance. Art, lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture, polit\u00adi\u00adcal thought, the\u00adatre, film, radio then become per\u00adti\u00adnent as spaces of col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion that open a hith\u00ader\u00adto less explored archive of friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
