Dur\u00ading the expe\u00addi\u00adtion he col\u00adlect\u00aded anthro\u00adpo\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal data and ethno\u00adgraph\u00adic objects and sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly doc\u00adu\u00adment\u00aded the vis\u00adit\u00aded com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties with his camera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This col\u00adlec\u00adtion \u2013 con\u00adsist\u00ading of cir\u00adca 11,000 pho\u00adtographs, about 2,000 objects, pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtions and 7 diaries which were writ\u00adten by the researcher dur\u00ading his jour\u00adney \u2013 is in the pos\u00adses\u00adsion of the State Ethno\u00adgraph\u00adic Col\u00adlec\u00adtions of Sax\u00adony (<span class=\"caps\">SES<\/span>). The major part of the objects and pho\u00adtographs were col\u00adlect\u00aded dur\u00ading the researcher\u2019s vis\u00adit at dif\u00adfer\u00adent indige\u00adnous com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties in&nbsp;India.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Where\u00adas the objects and pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtions have always been in the pos\u00adses\u00adsion of the <span class=\"caps\">SES<\/span>, v. Eickstedt\u2019s pho\u00adtographs and diaries had been declared lost after World War <span class=\"caps\">II<\/span> and were only dis\u00adcov\u00adered after the death of the researcher. In the year 2003 the pho\u00adtographs and diaries were hand\u00aded over to the <span class=\"caps\">SES<\/span> to be pre\u00adserved and pub\u00adlished. After more than half a decade the col\u00adlec\u00adtion is joined by now and avail\u00adable for fur\u00adther research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some of the mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal has already been pub\u00adlished by schol\u00adars and a num\u00adber of small projects were con\u00adduct\u00aded on the basis of the col\u00adlec\u00adtion. The long term aim is to make the col\u00adlec\u00adtion dig\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adly acces\u00adsi\u00adble to researchers and oth\u00ader audiences.<br>\nThe pho\u00adtographs along with the col\u00adlect\u00aded ethno\u00adgraph\u00adic objects, diaries and pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtions pro\u00advide insights into v. Eickstedt\u2019s schol\u00adar\u00adship and the way anthro\u00adpo\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal knowl\u00adedge was gath\u00adered in the ear\u00adly twen\u00adti\u00adeth cen\u00adtu\u00adry. V. Eickstedt\u2019s method\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgy is cer\u00adtain\u00adly out\u00addat\u00aded and eth\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly high\u00adly con\u00adtro\u00adver\u00adsial but despite this, the col\u00adlec\u00adtion is an extreme\u00adly valu\u00adable source for researchers as well as for indige\u00adnous peo\u00adple them\u00adselves to recon\u00adstruct his\u00adto\u00adry, ear\u00adly rela\u00adtions and the process of Hin\u00adduiza\u00adtion. Togeth\u00ader with sim\u00adi\u00adlar col\u00adlec\u00adtions such as Christoph von F\u00fcr\u00ader-Haimen\u00addorf (<span class=\"caps\">SOAS<\/span>, Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Lon\u00addon), and William Archer (<span class=\"caps\">MAA<\/span>, Cam\u00adbridge Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty) the v. Eick\u00adst\u00adedt col\u00adlec\u00adtion is one of the most com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion of indige\u00adnous com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties in India. For this rea\u00adson it is some\u00adwhat aston\u00adish\u00ading that India remained on West Germany\u2018s side in regard to the \u2018Ger\u00adman Ques\u00adtion\u2018, and offi\u00adcial\u00adly accept\u00aded Adenauer\u2019s claim of sole rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion and did not recog\u00adnise the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> as a sov\u00ader\u00adeign&nbsp;state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the files of the Fed\u00ader\u00adal Chan\u00adcellery at the Bun\u00adde\u00adsarchiv Koblenz, a report can be found, writ\u00adten in Jan\u00adu\u00adary 1960 by Klaus Mehn\u00adert, a con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive jour\u00adnal\u00adist broad\u00adcast\u00ader and for\u00adeign pol\u00adi\u00adcy com\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtor on a meet\u00ading he had with the Per\u00adma\u00adnent Under\u00adsec\u00adre\u00adtary of the Indi\u00adan For\u00adeign Office, S. Dutt. Mehn\u00adert describes parts of the one-hour meet\u00ading, in which Dutt spoke to him \u2019\u2026as an Indi\u00adan, not part of the Gov\u00adern\u00adment\u2026\u2019 about the con\u00adtra\u00addic\u00adtions of Bonn\u2019s pol\u00adi\u00adcy in regards to the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> and hint\u00aded at India\u2019s grow\u00ading incli\u00adna\u00adtion to recog\u00adnise the&nbsp;<span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The dis\u00adcus\u00adsion and in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar Mehnert\u2019s reply to Dutt pro\u00advides an impor\u00adtant indi\u00adca\u00adtion of how, just three years after Yugoslavia had recog\u00adnised the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span>, Ade\u00adnauer and influ\u00aden\u00adtial West Ger\u00adman con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtives tried to sus\u00adtain the claim for sole rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion, in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar in regards to devel\u00adop\u00ading countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Using files from the Chan\u00adcellery, the archives of the Ausw\u00e4r\u00adtiges Amt and the Kred\u00adi\u00adtanstalt f\u00fcr Wieder\u00adauf\u00adbau (KfW) (as well as some doc\u00adu\u00adments from the Thyssen-Krupp archive) this paper com\u00adbines a diplo\u00admat\u00adic and eco\u00adnom\u00adic his\u00adto\u00adry approach to explain Mehnert\u2019s and Adenauer\u2019s posi\u00adtion vis-a-vis India\u2019s con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtions to recog\u00adnise the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> and the con\u00adse\u00adquences such a move would have had for Bonn\u2019s for\u00adeign policy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"background-color: #bababa;\">\n<td>\n<h2><strong>Chen Tzoref-Ashkenazi <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hei\u00addel\u00adberg<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<h2>Archival Sources on the Hanoverian Regiments in India: The Nieders\u00e4chsisches<br>\nLandesarchiv in Hanover<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1782 two reg\u00adi\u00adments of the army of Hanover were sent to India to help the East India Com\u00adpa\u00adny in the Sec\u00adond Anglo-Mysore War. The troops, con\u00adsist\u00ading of 2000 sol\u00addiers, were the largest orga\u00adnized group of Ger\u00admans who came to India in the eigh\u00adteenth cen\u00adtu\u00adry. They took part in one major bat\u00adtle and var\u00adi\u00adous expe\u00addi\u00adtions. After the war they served main\u00adly as gar\u00adri\u00adson troops until 1791, when they began to be sent home. While my recent work on the Hanover\u00adian reg\u00adi\u00adments focused on their pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtions, which includ\u00aded trav\u00adel books and mag\u00ada\u00adzine arti\u00adcles, it also made use of archival mate\u00adri\u00adals. Although the India Office Records holds impor\u00adtant sources on the orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion and recruit\u00adment of these reg\u00adi\u00adments, by far the most impor\u00adtant sources are those held by the Nieder\u00ads\u00e4ch\u00adsis\u00adches Lan\u00addesarchiv in Hanover. This is espe\u00adcial\u00adly the case for sources on the admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion of the reg\u00adi\u00adments that would sup\u00adply invalu\u00adable infor\u00adma\u00adtion for mil\u00adi\u00adtary and social his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans. What this archive lacks, on the oth\u00ader hand, is more per\u00adson\u00adal sources such as pri\u00advate let\u00adters and diaries, the kind of sources found in rel\u00ada\u00adtive abun\u00addance for the almost con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary expe\u00addi\u00adtion of Ger\u00adman aux\u00adil\u00adiary troops to North Amer\u00adi\u00adca. The deter\u00admin\u00ading fac\u00adtor in this round of my archival vis\u00adit was the Allied Order of Decem\u00adber 6, 1945, which instruct\u00aded all local and dis\u00adtrict author\u00adi\u00adties in Ger\u00admany to con\u00adduct exhaus\u00adtive search\u00ades for all doc\u00adu\u00adments and infor\u00adma\u00adtion con\u00adcern\u00ading mil\u00adi\u00adtary and civil\u00adian per\u00adsons belong\u00ading to the Unit\u00aded King\u00addom since 1939 and to sub\u00admit their find\u00adings imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly to the com\u00admand of their respec\u00adtive occu\u00adpa\u00adtion forces. This order gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded enor\u00admous evi\u00addence for the his\u00adto\u00adry of insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal remem\u00adbrance. The col\u00adlec\u00adtion has brought into light fresh evi\u00addence that has so far not been utilised to eval\u00adu\u00adate the pres\u00adence of South Asians dur\u00ading <span class=\"caps\">WWII<\/span> and will fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly alter our under\u00adstand\u00ading of their every\u00adday life in the Third&nbsp;Reich.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The evi\u00addence deals with the ascer\u00adtain\u00ading, count\u00ading, reg\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion, and at times exhuma\u00adtion of graves. It con\u00adtains lists of civil\u00adians and pris\u00adon\u00aders of war-dead or alive- from a host of Sta\u00adlags and Arbeit\u00adskom\u00adman\u00addos, sick bays and res\u00adi\u00adden\u00adtial areas. An over\u00adwhelm\u00ading major\u00adi\u00adty among the dead com\u00adprised South Asian Fau\u00adjis who left the shores of their land to fight the war. A frac\u00adtion of them served the Wehrma\u00adcht as a part of the Indi\u00adan Legion and it is large\u00adly their pres\u00adence which has been not\u00aded in his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal accounts so far. The death records of these anony\u00admous Fau\u00adjis demon\u00adstrate that they were con\u00adtemp\u00adtu\u00adous\u00adly dumped in the back\u00adyards of towns such as Ans\u00adbach, Fuessen, Neustadt, Bischoe\u00adf\u00adgru\u00aden, Bercht\u00ades\u00adgaden, Garmisch, Regens\u00adburg, Lauter\u00adhofen, West\u00ader\u00adtimke, San\u00adthofen, Her\u00adborn, Darm\u00adstadt, Bre\u00admer\u00advo\u00aderde, while a tiny minor\u00adi\u00adty secured a place in the local Fried\u00adhofs . In any event, their mor\u00adtal remains lay in ditch\u00ades in a for\u00adeign land that denied them any right to rit\u00adu\u00adals of mourn\u00ading and death that sol\u00addiers con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly deserve. I also found sketchy records from men\u00adtal hos\u00adpi\u00adtals, sana\u00adto\u00adri\u00adums, sick bays, and hos\u00adpi\u00adtals which some of them vis\u00adit\u00aded before dying. A sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant num\u00adber of Fau\u00adjis worked in Sta\u00adlags and Arbeit\u00adskom\u00adman\u00addos as slave labour slog\u00adging 8 hours a day, 6 days a week until their lib\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion in mid&nbsp;1945.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The evi\u00addence that I have been able to unearth so far speaks vol\u00adumes for the silence, gloom, neglect, con\u00adde\u00adscen\u00adsion, depres\u00adsion, and per\u00adse\u00adcu\u00adtion that enveloped the every\u00adday life of the South Asian Fau\u00adji in <span class=\"caps\">WWII<\/span>. Inher\u00adent in the nature of this knowl\u00adedge gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion was an ele\u00adment of com\u00adpul\u00adsion \u2018from above\u2019 to report the dead, alive or miss\u00ading per\u00adsons, which per se denies the his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan any pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of find\u00ading sub\u00adjec\u00adtive expe\u00adri\u00adences of these sol\u00addiers. There are no tes\u00adti\u00admonies, no let\u00adters, no effects, no last wish\u00ades, let alone diaries and oth\u00ader ego doc\u00adu\u00adments in these hold\u00adings. There are no sto\u00adries of human con\u00adtact, com\u00adpas\u00adsion and empa\u00adthy from \u2018the oth\u00ader uni\u00adverse\u2019, inhab\u00adit\u00aded by ordi\u00adnary Ger\u00admans not very far from these sites. And yet they have left behind enough tan\u00adgi\u00adble traces of their worka\u00adday from sev\u00ader\u00adal sites of work and death. Dur\u00ading the 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, at the peak of Ger\u00adman inter\u00adest in India-relat\u00aded mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal, antiq\u00adui\u00adty and San\u00adskrit were the themes that dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded schol\u00adar\u00adship in the field of Indol\u00ado\u00adgy. This paper will try to make a case for anoth\u00ader sto\u00adry of Indol\u00ado\u00adgy, which is less San\u00adskrit-ori\u00adent\u00aded, and less obsessed with the notion of antiq\u00adui\u00adty. This oth\u00ader sto\u00adry of Indol\u00ado\u00adgy begins in the ear\u00adly mod\u00adern peri\u00adod when Euro\u00adpean Catholic and Protes\u00adtant mis\u00adsion\u00adar\u00adies came to the Indi\u00adan sub-con\u00adti\u00adnent main\u00adly in order to evan\u00adge\u00adlize and spread the mes\u00adsage of Christ, but were drawn into unan\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00aded nego\u00adti\u00ada\u00adtions with their imme\u00addi\u00adate con\u00adtexts, result\u00ading in knowl\u00adedge exchange, knowl\u00adedge inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion, and knowl\u00adedge medi\u00ada\u00adtion. This oth\u00ader sto\u00adry of Indol\u00ado\u00adgy is less about a pan-Indi\u00adan cul\u00adture but more about ver\u00adnac\u00adu\u00adlar knowl\u00adedge, that is, knowl\u00adedge that is native to a spe\u00adcif\u00adic region of the sub\u00adcon\u00adti\u00adnent. The mis\u00adsion\u00adary-medi\u00adat\u00aded cir\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtion of ver\u00adnac\u00adu\u00adlar knowl\u00adedge shaped sev\u00ader\u00adal fields of inquiry in mul\u00adti-direc\u00adtion\u00adal ways. One such field is the are\u00adna of botan\u00adi\u00adcal stud\u00adies, and anoth\u00ader, that of lin\u00adguis\u00adtics and lan\u00adguage studies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This paper will track the way Euro\u00adpean traders and mis\u00adsion\u00adar\u00adies engaged South Indi\u00adan prac\u00adti\u00adcal and tex\u00adtu\u00adal knowl\u00adedge about the med\u00adi\u00adc\u00adi\u00adnal use of local plants, and sought to make this knowl\u00adedge avail\u00adable to Europe through a net\u00adwork of indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals, insti\u00adtu\u00adtions and pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtions. For exam\u00adple, the begin\u00adnings of the fas\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtion for the med\u00adi\u00adc\u00adi\u00adnal plants of South India can be found in a very ear\u00adly doc\u00adu\u00adment called Viri\u00addar\u00adi\u00adum Ori\u00aden\u00adtale, put togeth\u00ader by a Dis\u00adcalced Carmelite Monk called Matthew of St Joseph (1612\u20131691) dur\u00ading the sec\u00adond half of the 17th cen\u00adtu\u00adry. Matthew of St Joseph then became an impor\u00adtant col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtor of the high-rank\u00ading Dutch East India Com\u00adpa\u00adny (<span class=\"caps\">VOC<\/span>) offi\u00adcer Hen\u00addrik Adri\u00adaan van Reede tot Drak\u00aden\u00adstein (1636\u20131691) and Reede\u2019s team of co-work\u00aders (that includ\u00aded a local Ezha\u00adva doc\u00adtor, Itty Achu\u00addem, and three Pan\u00addits, Dutch botanists, illus\u00adtra\u00adtors, and local helpers) in the ear\u00adly stages of the pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion of the mag\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcent 12-vol\u00adume illus\u00adtrat\u00aded book called Hor\u00adtus Indi\u00adcus Mal\u00adabar\u00adi\u00adcus (1678\u20131703). This book not only influ\u00adenced botanists such as Carl von Lin\u00adnaeus (1707\u20131778), but also the Protes\u00adtant mis\u00adsion\u00adar\u00adies from&nbsp;Halle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is the objec\u00adtive of this paper to track the glob\u00adal cir\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtion of indige\u00adnous botan\u00adi\u00adcal knowl\u00adedge, and to fol\u00adlow its unan\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00aded jour\u00adneys from South India to Europe; from Europe back to India; from the past to the present. Many of these jour\u00adneys were facil\u00adi\u00adtat\u00aded by the schol\u00adar\u00adly work of the Ger\u00admanophone mis\u00adsion\u00adar\u00adies. Its return was enabled by schol\u00adars and ped\u00ada\u00adgogues who worked in the field of Botany. This also includes the oper\u00adat\u00ading expe\u00adri\u00adence with the online search engine of the Francke Foundation\u2019s Archive. The search engine not only helps to localise the archival mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal, but also enhances \u2013 through the inter\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adtion of names, dates, prove\u00adniences, and key\u00adwords \u2013 the epis\u00adte\u00admo\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal approach of Dig\u00adi\u00adtal Human\u00adi\u00adties.
