In Pan\u00adel 1, which was chaired by <span class=\"caps\">ANGELIKA<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">MALINAR<\/span> from Zurich Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, <span class=\"caps\">MARTIN<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">CHRISTOF-F\u00dcCHSLE<\/span> from the Cen\u00adtre for Mod\u00adern Indi\u00adan Stud\u00adies in G\u00f6t\u00adtin\u00adgen pre\u00adsent\u00aded sources from mil\u00adi\u00adtary as well as mis\u00adsion\u00adary per\u00adson\u00adal in the Mysore Wars in South India in the sec\u00adond half of the 18th cen\u00adtu\u00adry. In this series of wars between dif\u00adfer\u00adent Euro\u00adpean and Indi\u00adan fac\u00adtions, Hanover\u00adian Reg\u00adi\u00adments took part in bat\u00adtle and gar\u00adri\u00adson duty at the side of the British East India Com\u00adpa\u00adny. The mis\u00adsion\u00adar\u00adies from Halle on the oth\u00ader hand expe\u00adri\u00adenced the war from a civil\u00adian per\u00adspec\u00adtive and where due to their assign\u00adment often in close con\u00adtact with the local pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion. Both archives offer new per\u00adspec\u00adtives on a, in terms of social his\u00adto\u00adry, rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly lit\u00adtle researched peri\u00adod of coloni\u00adsa\u00adtion in India, as they rep\u00adre\u00adsent an Euro\u00adpean per\u00adspec\u00adtive but with\u00adout the con\u00adstraints of con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary British legit\u00adimi\u00adsa\u00adtion discourses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pan\u00adel 2, which was chaired by Joachim Oester\u00adheld (<span class=\"caps\">ZMO<\/span>), began with <span class=\"caps\">RAZAK<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">KHAN<\/span> (G\u00f6t\u00adtin\u00adgen Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty), who argued that there is no clear\u00ader exam\u00adple of entan\u00adgle\u00adment than a trans\u00adlat\u00aded text. The exam\u00adple of Abid Husain, who as a nation\u00adal\u00adist Mus\u00adlim was in a sense still trans-nation\u00adal\u00adist in his prac\u00adtice of trans\u00adla\u00adtion of Ger\u00adman texts into Urdu illus\u00adtrates this. Trans\u00adla\u00adtion here becomes a minor\u00adi\u00adty prac\u00adtice. Which lan\u00adguage is cho\u00adsen for trans\u00adla\u00adtion reveals some\u00adthing about the pow\u00ader rela\u00adtions between lan\u00adguages and there\u00adfore reminds us, that archives are not only places of explo\u00adration but also prac\u00adtices of pow\u00ader. Khan shows for exam\u00adple that the turn to clas\u00adsi\u00adcism in Urdu lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture only part\u00adly stemmed from its oppo\u00adsi\u00adtion to Hin\u00addi, but also devel\u00adoped because of the lack of expres\u00adsion in mod\u00adern lan\u00adguage for cer\u00adtain words that need\u00aded translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"caps\">PASCALE<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">RABAULT-FEUERHAHN<\/span> (<span class=\"caps\">CNRS<\/span>, Paris) gave an insight into the Ger\u00adman 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry debates about the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and legit\u00adi\u00adma\u00adcy of Indi\u00adan Indo\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal schol\u00adar\u00adship. Rabault-Feuer\u00adhahn argued, that in order to tru\u00adly over\u00adcome nation\u00adal\u00adism as a frame\u00adwork of his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal writ\u00ading, the schol\u00adar must cre\u00adate entan\u00adgled archives. An exam\u00adple for this is Raubault-Feuer\u00adhahns study of the debates of the Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Con\u00adgress of Ori\u00aden\u00adtal\u00adists in Paris 1873 and fol\u00adlow\u00ading cri\u00adsis of Euro\u00adpean indol\u00ado\u00adgy, regard\u00ading the ques\u00adtion of the inclu\u00adsion of Indi\u00adan schol\u00adars into the dis\u00adci\u00adpline. The dif\u00adfer\u00adent sources show the inten\u00adsi\u00adty of debate between some of the most influ\u00aden\u00adtial Ger\u00adman and French ori\u00aden\u00adtal\u00adists of their time, but also reveal for exam\u00adple the per\u00adspec\u00adtive of R. G. Bhan\u00addark\u00adar, an Indi\u00adan attendee of a con\u00adgress of ori\u00aden\u00adtal\u00adists in Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"caps\">THIAGO<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">PINTO<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">BARBOSA<\/span> (<span class=\"caps\">ZMO<\/span>) fol\u00adlowed an actor-net\u00adwork approach to dis\u00adcuss glob\u00adal entan\u00adgle\u00adments in anthro\u00adpo\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal knowl\u00adedge pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. He dis\u00adcussed the trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion of knowl\u00adedge on the exam\u00adple of the cat\u00ade\u00adgo\u00adry of race, which was the cen\u00adtral cat\u00ade\u00adgo\u00adry of Ger\u00adman anthro\u00adpol\u00ado\u00adgy in the late 19th and ear\u00adly 20th cen\u00adtu\u00adry. Bar\u00adbosa fol\u00adlows the tra\u00adjec\u00adto\u00adry of an object, in this case a so called anthro\u00adpome\u00adter into its colo\u00adnial past. The anthro\u00adpome\u00adter was used by Irawati Karv\u00e9, who gained her PhD at the Kaiser Wil\u00adhelm Insti\u00adtute in Berlin. Her research on skulls inter\u00adest\u00ading\u00adly enough con\u00adtra\u00addicts the rul\u00ading the\u00adsis of racial dif\u00adfer\u00adences of her time, how\u00adev\u00ader the rea\u00adsons for the sin\u00adgu\u00adlar\u00adi\u00adty of her find\u00adings remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pan\u00adel 3, chaired by Michael Mann (Hum\u00adboldt Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty) changed per\u00adspec\u00adtive from the actors to the archives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"caps\">GERDIEN<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">JONKER<\/span> (Erlan\u00adgen Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty) dis\u00adcussed the role of pri\u00advate and fam\u00adi\u00adly archives in the writ\u00ading of entan\u00adgled Indo-Ger\u00adman his\u00adto\u00adries. Jonker talked about the process and specifics of work\u00ading with the archive of the Lahore-Ahmadiyya Mosque in Berlin. Being nei\u00adther a state archive nor a pri\u00advate fam\u00adi\u00adly archive, it is an exam\u00adple of civ\u00adil soci\u00adety organ\u00adis\u00ading itself, cre\u00adat\u00ading an organ\u00adised but not pub\u00adlicly acces\u00adsi\u00adble archive. The ques\u00adtion now is, how to make this archive com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcate with oth\u00ader archives. An exam\u00adple can be mar\u00adriage files found in the archive, who are linked to sim\u00adi\u00adlar doc\u00adu\u00adments in fam\u00adi\u00adly archives, but also appear in state obser\u00adva\u00adtions. If the dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adties of access and com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion can be over\u00adcome, civ\u00adil soci\u00adety archives like that of the Lahore-Ahmadiyya Mosque offer the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adic approach\u00ades out\u00adside of state archives or the use of pri\u00advate pos\u00adses\u00adsions as mere illus\u00adtra\u00adtional material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"caps\">BRITTA<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">LANGE<\/span> (Hum\u00adboldt Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty) pre\u00adsent\u00aded the epis\u00adte\u00admolo\u00adgies, prac\u00adtices and imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtions of the Berlin Sound Archives. A sound archive may be viewed on first glance as an unusu\u00adal archive, which how\u00adev\u00ader bears the ques\u00adtion what a \u201cusu\u00adal\u201d archive actu\u00adal\u00adly is. How\u00adev\u00ader, Lange argues that record\u00adings were used to both con\u00adserv\u00ading his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal moments and gain\u00ading pow\u00ader over ene\u00admies in times of war. Dur\u00ading war peri\u00adods, it was pos\u00adsi\u00adble to gain mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal from col\u00ado\u00adnized peo\u00adple with\u00adout trav\u00adel\u00adling since they were impris\u00adoned in Ger\u00admany. Those record\u00adings are sel\u00addom\u00adly known in the coun\u00adtries of the speak\u00ader, which leads to the ques\u00adtion whose memo\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal func\u00adtion the record\u00ading has and how we can lis\u00adten to records to analyse the pow\u00ader rela\u00adtion\u00adship that lies within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pan\u00adel 4 focused on Ger\u00admans in India. Ravi Ahu\u00adja (G\u00f6t\u00adtin\u00adgen Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty) chaired the discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"caps\">PANIKOS<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">PANAYI<\/span> (De Mont\u00adfort Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty) explored the case of Ger\u00adman internees in India dur\u00ading the First World War and their traces in Ger\u00adman as well as in British archives. When the war broke out, the Ger\u00admans in India con\u00adsist\u00aded main\u00adly of four groups: Mis\u00adsion\u00adar\u00adies, most\u00adly from the Basel and Leipzig Mis\u00adsions; trav\u00adellers, busi\u00adness\u00admen and \u201cnon-arm\u00adchair\u201d Indol\u00ado\u00adgists. Many of them, except from the mis\u00adsion\u00adar\u00adies, where part of the British rul\u00ading elite before the war broke out. After that the Empire tracked down as many Ger\u00adman cit\u00adi\u00adzens in its area of influ\u00adence as it could, expelling or detain\u00ading them. In India, there are accounts of mul\u00adti\u00adple sites of detain\u00adment of these unusu\u00adal pris\u00adon\u00aders of war and a whole range of archival infor\u00adma\u00adtion gives tes\u00adti\u00admo\u00adny to that, reach\u00ading from British, Ger\u00adman and Indi\u00adan offi\u00adcial doc\u00adu\u00adments to reports of inspec\u00adtion of the camps by Swiss and <span class=\"caps\">US<\/span> Embassy del\u00ade\u00adga\u00adtions and also let\u00adters and doc\u00adu\u00adments from the impris\u00adoned themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"caps\">ROLAND<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">WITTJE<\/span> (<span class=\"caps\">IIT<\/span>, Madras) pre\u00adsent\u00aded research about the Indi\u00adan Insti\u00adtute of Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy in Madras and Indo-Ger\u00adman Col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion in Sci\u00adence and Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy in gen\u00ader\u00adal. He con\u00adcep\u00adtion\u00adalised his research how\u00adev\u00ader not as an insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adry, but as a his\u00adto\u00adry of Cold War and devel\u00adop\u00adment dis\u00adcours\u00ades. The open\u00ading of the Insti\u00adtute is to be viewed more in the con\u00adtext of Cold War rival\u00adries than imme\u00addi\u00adate eco\u00adnom\u00adic inter\u00adests, which in turn lead to con\u00adflicts of inter\u00adest between Ger\u00admans and Indi\u00adans. The Ger\u00admans want\u00aded to struc\u00adture the Insti\u00adtute after the mod\u00adel of a \u201cTech\u00adnis\u00adche Lehranstalt\u201d (tech\u00adni\u00adcal col\u00adlege) with a strong focus on con\u00adnect\u00ading prac\u00adti\u00adcal expe\u00adri\u00adence with sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic meth\u00adods, while the Indi\u00adan side had more of an Indi\u00adan <span class=\"caps\">MIT<\/span> in mind, a dif\u00adfer\u00adence in align\u00adment which is prob\u00ada\u00adbly best sum\u00admoned up in the ques\u00adtion of blue col\u00adlar or white col\u00adlar work\u00aders that should be trained there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sec\u00adond day start\u00aded with Pan\u00adel 5, chaired by Van\u00addana Joshi (Del\u00adhi Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty) about the mak\u00ading of polit\u00adi\u00adcal archives. <span class=\"caps\">ANANDITA<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">BAJPAI<\/span> (Hum\u00adboldt Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty) dis\u00adcussed the his\u00adto\u00adry of Radio Berlin Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal dur\u00ading the Cold War in India. The <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> radio sta\u00adtion start\u00aded a Hin\u00addi depart\u00adment in 1967 and aimed to inform Indi\u00adans on life in the Ger\u00adman Demo\u00adc\u00adra\u00adt\u00adic Repub\u00adlic and estab\u00adlish social\u00adist thoughts and con\u00adcepts abroad. The depart\u00adment employed sev\u00ader\u00adal Ger\u00adman and three Indi\u00adan jour\u00adnal\u00adists and was con\u00adnect\u00aded to Moscow, where the dai\u00adly con\u00adtent of the broad\u00adcast was checked. Baj\u00adpai argued that the Indi\u00adan lis\u00adten\u00aders were not pas\u00adsive receivers of <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> pro\u00adpa\u00adgan\u00adda, but co-shapers of the medi\u00adum itself. The archive of Radio Berlin Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal reveals fan-mail, pho\u00adtos and cri\u00adtiques from the lis\u00adten\u00aders, who often lived in sub\u00adur\u00adban or rur\u00adal India. Through ques\u00adtions and com\u00adments of the fre\u00adquent lis\u00adten\u00aders, who part\u00adly were orga\u00adnized in clubs, a strong rela\u00adtion\u00adship between jour\u00adnal\u00adists in Ger\u00admany and a diverse group of peo\u00adple from India emerged. Since <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> cit\u00adi\u00adzens were not allowed to trav\u00adel to India, the cor\u00adre\u00adspon\u00addence also brought India clos\u00ader to the non-Indi\u00adan journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"caps\">ALEXANDER<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">BENATAR<\/span> (Hum\u00adboldt Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty) explored the mak\u00ading of for\u00adeign min\u00adistry archives in the con\u00adtext of Cold War rival\u00adry. He point\u00aded out that as the past itself is polit\u00adi\u00adcal, so are archives and the archivist is an impor\u00adtant fig\u00adure in form\u00ading a nations iden\u00adti\u00adty. The polit\u00adi\u00adcal func\u00adtion of archives seems evi\u00addent in the research about the cold war. While parts of the archives of the East-Ger\u00adman secret ser\u00advice had been burned, those of their west\u00adern adver\u00adsaries are not yet acces\u00adsi\u00adble. Despite these dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adties for research, espe\u00adcial\u00adly spies might in a sense entan\u00adgle archives far beyond the states con\u00adtrol. When the par\u00adti\u00adtion of Pak\u00adistan and Bangladesh hap\u00adpened in 1971, both Ger\u00adman states became active diplo\u00admat\u00adic par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants in the process. The Ger\u00adman Demo\u00adc\u00adra\u00adt\u00adic Repub\u00adlic seeked to rec\u00adog\u00adnize the new state of Bangladesh quick\u00adly in hopes of gain\u00ading offi\u00adcial recog\u00adni\u00adtion by India in return. The Fed\u00ader\u00adal Repub\u00adlic of Ger\u00admany, which still fol\u00adlowed the Hall\u00adstein Doc\u00adtrin in its for\u00adeign pol\u00adi\u00adcy, suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly tried to pre\u00advent this from hap\u00adpen\u00ading. In the high\u00adly politi\u00adcised mem\u00ado\u00adry of the process of this par\u00adti\u00adtion in South Asia, the per\u00adspec\u00adtive on entan\u00adgled archives can help on the one side to make vis\u00adi\u00adble the agency of actors in South Asia, who were more than pawns in a game of Cold War pow\u00aders, but also shed a light on oth\u00ader\u00adwise hid\u00adden con\u00adtra\u00addic\u00adtions and gaps in nation\u00adal archives in regard to a high\u00adly politi\u00adcised mat\u00adter like&nbsp;this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The clos\u00ading Pan\u00adel 6, chaired by Heike Liebau (<span class=\"caps\">ZMO<\/span>), viewed dif\u00adfer\u00adent aspects of trust and coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion. <span class=\"caps\">RACHEL<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">LEE<\/span> (<span class=\"caps\">LMU<\/span> M\u00fcnchen) pre\u00adsent\u00aded research about Otto K\u00f6nigs\u00adberg\u00ader\u2019s work in India. The archi\u00adtect and archae\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgist who fled from Nazi per\u00adse\u00adcu\u00adtion to India in 1935 and became an influ\u00aden\u00adtial con\u00adtrib\u00adu\u00adtor in hous\u00ading pro\u00adgrams and archi\u00adtec\u00adtur\u00adal plan\u00adning there, espe\u00adcial\u00adly in Mum\u00adbai. His work is clear\u00adly vis\u00adi\u00adble up to today, which draws atten\u00adtion to the fact that build\u00adings them\u00adselves serve as archives as well. The work on the entan\u00adgled his\u00adto\u00adry of K\u00f6nigs\u00adberg\u00ader\u2019s life and archi\u00adtec\u00adtur\u00adal work in exile drew from sources that ranged from pri\u00advate col\u00adlec\u00adtions of Renate K\u00f6nigs\u00adberg\u00ader to the Swiss Insti\u00adtute Archive in Kairo. Con\u00adcern\u00ading archi\u00adtec\u00adture and space, Lee point\u00aded out that the way archives them\u00adselves are built and orga\u00adnized (for exam\u00adple in their cat\u00ada\u00adlogu\u00ading sys\u00adtem) affects research and writ\u00ading process\u00ades, since they offer spe\u00adcif\u00adic obvi\u00adous work\u00ading methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"caps\">SVENJA<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">VON<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">JAN<\/span> (G\u00f6t\u00adtin\u00adgen Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty) gave insight into the entan\u00adgled his\u00adto\u00adry of las\u00adcar sea\u00admen in Ham\u00adburg. Dur\u00ading her research she used sev\u00ader\u00adal archives, includ\u00ading state archives, muse\u00adum archives and com\u00adpa\u00adny archives and point\u00aded out that dom\u00adi\u00adnant archives tend to silence non\u00addom\u00adi\u00adnant sto\u00adries. Most of the infor\u00adma\u00adtion on the <span class=\"caps\">IPI<\/span> activ\u00adi\u00adties lies in the British library. There, ille\u00adgal activ\u00adi\u00adties in Ham\u00adburg are not filed, which leads to the need to decen\u00adtral\u00adize British archives and broad\u00aden per\u00adspec\u00adtives on the Ham\u00adburg crime scene. Dur\u00ading the 1920ies the las\u00adcars oper\u00adat\u00aded in legal and ille\u00adgal net\u00adworks, smug\u00adgled weapons, cocaine, liquor and com\u00admu\u00adnist lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture and orga\u00adnized them\u00adselves in polit\u00adi\u00adcal net\u00adworks.
