A pub\u00adlic event was held on May 10 at the <span class=\"caps\">ZMO<\/span>, Berlin. <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> start\u00aded in Novem\u00adber 2014 and \u2013 pro\u00advid\u00aded it leads to suc\u00adcess\u00adful appli\u00adca\u00adtions \u2013 is planned for a max\u00adi\u00admum of 12 years until 2026. It is being car\u00adried out at three aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic insti\u00adtu\u00adtions: the Cen\u00adtre for Mod\u00adern Indi\u00adan Stud\u00adies (CeMIS) at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of G\u00f6t\u00adtin\u00adgen, the Insti\u00adtute of Asian and African Stud\u00adies (<span class=\"caps\">IAAW<\/span>) at the Hum\u00adboldt Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in Berlin and the Zen\u00adtrum Mod\u00adern\u00ader Ori\u00adent (<span class=\"caps\">ZMO<\/span>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span>\u00b4s main aim is to dis\u00adcov\u00ader and describe col\u00adlec\u00adtions of archival doc\u00adu\u00adments in Ger\u00adman insti\u00adtu\u00adtions that are relat\u00aded to the polit\u00adi\u00adcal, cul\u00adtur\u00adal, social or intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adry of mod\u00adern India and to the his\u00adto\u00adry of Indo-Ger\u00adman entan\u00adgle\u00adments. The project starts from the assump\u00adtion that the abun\u00addance, diver\u00adsi\u00adty and sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic poten\u00adtial of col\u00adlec\u00adtions on mod\u00adern India host\u00aded in Ger\u00adman archives have been insuf\u00adfi\u00adcient\u00adly appre\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded so far. For the inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty of his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans of India, these resources can open up new research per\u00adspec\u00adtives that have remained obscured by an exces\u00adsive fix\u00ada\u00adtion on British colo\u00adnial archives. The large\u00adly unex\u00adplored source mate\u00adri\u00adals not only call for a recon\u00adstruc\u00adtion of the his\u00adto\u00adry of Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan entan\u00adgle\u00adments since the 18<sup>th<\/sup> cen\u00adtu\u00adry, they also encour\u00adage the devel\u00adop\u00adment of inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive research ques\u00adtions in com\u00adpar\u00ada\u00adtive and glob\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adry, which might be of inter\u00adest and inspi\u00adra\u00adtion for issues of transna\u00adtion\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adog\u00adra\u00adphy at&nbsp;large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> online research por\u00adtal con\u00adsists of three parts: a <em>Data\u00adbase<\/em>, an <em>Archival Reflex\u00adi\u00adcon<\/em> and <em>The\u00admat\u00adic Resources<\/em>. The data\u00adbase con\u00adtains sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adic infor\u00adma\u00adtion about col\u00adlec\u00adtions relat\u00aded to mod\u00adern India in Ger\u00adman archives. So far, infor\u00adma\u00adtion on India-relat\u00aded hold\u00adings in 11 archives is avail\u00adable, among them such big state insti\u00adtu\u00adtions as the <em>Poli\u00adtis\u00adches Archiv des Ausw\u00e4r\u00adti\u00adgen Amts, <\/em>the <em>Bun\u00adde\u00adsarchiv,<\/em> the <em>Geheimes Staat\u00adsarchiv Preussis\u00adch\u00ader Kul\u00adturbe\u00adsitz<\/em>, the <em>Staat\u00adsarchiv Ham\u00adburg<\/em> and the <em>Nieder\u00ads\u00e4ch\u00adsis\u00adches Lan\u00addesarchiv Han\u00adnover<\/em>. Besides these large col\u00adlec\u00adtions, infor\u00adma\u00adtion is also pro\u00advid\u00aded on India-relat\u00aded sources in less\u00ader-known archives in Ger\u00admany, such as the com\u00admu\u00adnal <em>Stadtarchiv Halle <\/em>or the <em>Archiv der Jugend\u00adbe\u00adwe\u00adgung<\/em>, Burg Lud\u00adwig\u00adstein in Witzen\u00adhausen. The data\u00adbase is an open-access and con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous\u00adly grow\u00ading platform.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sec\u00adond pil\u00adlar of the research por\u00adtal, the <em>Archival Reflex\u00adi\u00adcon <\/em>is an ongo\u00ading col\u00adlec\u00adtion of essays on his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal or method\u00adolog\u00adi\u00adcal themes and col\u00adlec\u00adtions. It \u201cis thus a reflex\u00adive lex\u00adi\u00adcon \u2013 of how to nav\u00adi\u00adgate through India-relat\u00aded hold\u00adings in Ger\u00adman archives, acquire an overview of the same for spe\u00adcif\u00adic top\u00adics, and of how to crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly engage with larg\u00ader the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal and method\u00adolog\u00adi\u00adcal debates that emerge from the exer\u00adcise of trac\u00ading, extract\u00ading, list\u00ading, order\u00ading and index\u00ading infor\u00adma\u00adtion\u201d (https:\/\/www.projekt-mida.de\/rechercheportal\/reflexicon\/).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third pil\u00adlar of the <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> research por\u00adtal, the <em>The\u00admat\u00adic Resources<\/em> rubric, pro\u00advides research data gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded with\u00adin <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span>, includ\u00ading a list of all suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly com\u00adplet\u00aded India-relat\u00aded PhDs at Ger\u00adman uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adties between 1783 and&nbsp;2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> team is extreme\u00adly thank\u00adful to the Deutsche Forschungs\u00adge\u00admein\u00adschaft (<span class=\"caps\">DFG<\/span>) for fund\u00ading this project, to our three insti\u00adtu\u00adtions, <span class=\"caps\">CEMIS<\/span>, <span class=\"caps\">IAAW<\/span> and <span class=\"caps\">ZMO<\/span> for host\u00ading it, to the <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> advi\u00adso\u00adry board for its con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous sup\u00adport and to the ser\u00advice Cen\u00adter eSciences in Tri\u00ader for devel\u00adop\u00ading and pro\u00advid\u00ading us with the nec\u00ades\u00adsary soft\u00adware.
