In April 2026, MIDA<\/span> (Mod\u00adern India in Ger\u00adman Archives, 1706\u20131989<\/em>) orga\u00adnized a two-day work\u00adshop with the title \u201cVio\u00adlent Entan\u00adgle\u00adments \u2013 Trac\u00ading Life and Loss in Colo\u00adnial Archives\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the fif\u00adteenth cen\u00adtu\u00adry onward, Euro\u00adpean colo\u00adnial expan\u00adsion was insep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adble from prac\u00adtices of doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion, clas\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion, and record-keep\u00ading that ren\u00addered ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adries, peo\u00adples, and non\u00adhu\u00adman life leg\u00adi\u00adble to impe\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal regimes, giv\u00ading rise to colo\u00adnial archives. Far from neu\u00adtral repos\u00adi\u00adto\u00adries, these archives func\u00adtioned as epis\u00adtemic instru\u00adments that enabled extrac\u00adtion, dis\u00adpos\u00adses\u00adsion, and dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion, while simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly obscur\u00ading the phys\u00adi\u00adcal vio\u00adlence through which they were con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous\u00adly pro\u00adduced and repro\u00adduced. The records pre\u00adserved today\u2014textual, audio-visu\u00adal, oral, botan\u00adi\u00adcal, zoo\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal, and digital\u2014bear the traces of these process\u00ades, reg\u00adis\u00adter\u00ading not only admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtive con\u00adtrol and sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic ambi\u00adtion, but also loss, dis\u00adplace\u00adment, extinc\u00adtion, and era\u00adsure. At the same time, colo\u00adnial archives remain deeply ambiva\u00adlent sites: while they have his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly sta\u00adbi\u00adlized unequal pow\u00ader rela\u00adtions and mar\u00adgin\u00adal\u00adized non-dom\u00adi\u00adnant forms of knowl\u00adedge, they also con\u00adtain the doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtary con\u00addi\u00adtions through which past injus\u00adtices can be traced, con\u00adtest\u00aded, and made visible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this work\u00adshop, we use vio\u00adlence as an ana\u00adlyt\u00adi\u00adcal lens to explore the eth\u00adi\u00adcal, epis\u00adte\u00admo\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal, and his\u00adto\u00adri\u00ado\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal chal\u00adlenges of work\u00ading with archival remains that are insep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adble from colo\u00adnial dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion yet con\u00adtin\u00adue to struc\u00adture con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary research prac\u00adtices. By attend\u00ading to mate\u00adri\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty, sen\u00adso\u00adry expe\u00adri\u00adence, spa\u00adtial design, and archival medi\u00ada\u00adtion, this work\u00adshop also opens pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties for crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly reimag\u00adin\u00ading the archive beyond its colo\u00adnial lega\u00adcies. Dur\u00ading the work\u00adshop, we will have group dis\u00adcus\u00adsions on pub\u00adlished arti\u00adcles that are pro\u00advid\u00aded via a read\u00ader before\u00adhand to fur\u00adther our under\u00adstand\u00ading of the inex\u00adtri\u00adca\u00adble entan\u00adgle\u00adments of archives, colo\u00adnial\u00adism and vio\u00adlence we encounter in archival research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Report<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con\u00adceived as a read\u00ading work\u00adshop, the event brought togeth\u00ader stu\u00addents from the Master\u2019s Pro\u00adgramme Glob\u00adal His\u00adto\u00adry, researchers from dif\u00adfer\u00adent dis\u00adci\u00adplines, and invit\u00aded guests\u2014Marika Cifor (Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Wash\u00ading\u00adton), Malli\u00adka Leuzinger (ZMO<\/span>), Cata\u00adri\u00adna Madru\u00adga (TU<\/span> Berlin), and Chris\u00adt\u00adian Stenz (Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Heidelberg)\u2014for two days of live\u00adly dis\u00adcus\u00adsions. Struc\u00adtured across four ses\u00adsions, the work\u00adshop crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly engaged with key strands of lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture on colo\u00adnial archives, mate\u00adri\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty, affect, and the own\u00ader\u00adship of Indige\u00adnous knowl\u00adedge and her\u00aditage in con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary archival con\u00adtexts. Rather than approach\u00ading archives as neu\u00adtral repos\u00adi\u00adto\u00adries, dis\u00adcus\u00adsions fore\u00adground\u00aded their role as active sites of knowl\u00adedge pro\u00adduc\u00adtion, shaped by colo\u00adnial pow\u00ader rela\u00adtions, clas\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adto\u00adry prac\u00adtices, and epis\u00adtemic hierarchies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first ses\u00adsion focused on the colo\u00adnial archive as a site of knowl\u00adedge pro\u00adduc\u00adtion and pow\u00ader, empha\u00adsiz\u00ading how archives and muse\u00adums are embed\u00added in hege\u00admon\u00adic struc\u00adtures and may repro\u00adduce colo\u00adnial log\u00adics through clas\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion, nam\u00ading, and access. A cen\u00adtral insight was that the logis\u00adti\u00adcal and polit\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00addi\u00adtions of access\u2014such as resources, insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal frame\u00adworks, and archival infrastructures\u2014can them\u00adselves con\u00adsti\u00adtute forms of vio\u00adlence, deter\u00admin\u00ading who is able to engage with archival mate\u00adri\u00adals and whose his\u00adto\u00adries remain vis\u00adi\u00adble. Par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants also reflect\u00aded on the mul\u00adti\u00adplic\u00adi\u00adty of archives and the exis\u00adtence of silences, stress\u00ading that not all expe\u00adri\u00adences enter the archive and that some mate\u00adri\u00adals remain unused or dis\u00adap\u00adpear over time chal\u00adleng\u00ading assump\u00adtions about com\u00adplete\u00adness and neutrality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sec\u00adond ses\u00adsion turned to the sta\u00adtus and agency of archival objects and their shift\u00ading sta\u00adtus with\u00adin archival and muse\u00adum con\u00adtexts. Par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants explored how archival mate\u00adri\u00adals move between states of use\u00adful\u00adness and neglect shaped by process\u00ades of main\u00adte\u00adnance, decay, and rein\u00adter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion. These tran\u00adsi\u00adtions were under\u00adstood not as pas\u00adsive out\u00adcomes, but as dynam\u00adic process\u00ades rais\u00ading ques\u00adtions about mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal agency: how does the mate\u00adri\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty of archival doc\u00adu\u00adments shape social rela\u00adtions, tem\u00adpo\u00adral\u00adi\u00adties, and knowl\u00adedge prac\u00adtices? Par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants empha\u00adsized that use\u00adful\u00adness is nei\u00adther inher\u00adent nor sta\u00adble, but emerges relationally\u2014through insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal frame\u00adworks, archival prac\u00adtices, and broad\u00ader con\u00adstel\u00adla\u00adtions of pow\u00ader and mean\u00ading. Colo\u00adnial his\u00adto\u00adries of col\u00adlect\u00ading, clas\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion, and archiv\u00ading were dis\u00adcussed as ongo\u00ading vio\u00adlent con\u00adfig\u00adu\u00adra\u00adtions of pow\u00ader that need to be addressed by the researchers engaged with the archives\u2019 material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third ses\u00adsion addressed the expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adtial and affec\u00adtive dimen\u00adsions of archives, fore\u00adground\u00ading how spa\u00adtial arrange\u00adments, insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal set\u00adtings, and embod\u00adied encoun\u00adters shape researchers\u2019 rela\u00adtion\u00adships to archival mate\u00adri\u00adals. The read\u00ading room emerged as a polit\u00adi\u00adcal space, where access, dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion, and the orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion of mate\u00adri\u00adals influ\u00adence both inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion and emo\u00adtion\u00adal response. Par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants empha\u00adsized that expe\u00adri\u00adences of archives are diverse and sit\u00adu\u00adat\u00aded, shaped by posi\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty as well as by the broad\u00ader struc\u00adtures gov\u00adern\u00ading pub\u00adlic and pri\u00advate insti\u00adtu\u00adtions, which in turn affect how knowl\u00adedge is pro\u00adduced and under\u00adstood. Ques\u00adtions of who access\u00ades archives, under what con\u00addi\u00adtions, and with what emo\u00adtion\u00adal and epis\u00adtemic con\u00adse\u00adquences, were cen\u00adtral to these conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth and final ses\u00adsion deep\u00adened the workshop\u2019s engage\u00adment with affect, dis\u00adplace\u00adment, and ethics. Build\u00ading on con\u00adcepts of rad\u00adi\u00adcal empa\u00adthy and Indige\u00adnous archival futures, par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants exam\u00adined \u201cdis\u00adplaced archives\u201d\u2014records removed from their places of creation\u2014and the pow\u00ader dynam\u00adics embed\u00added in their con\u00adtin\u00adued cus\u00adto\u00addi\u00adan\u00adship, with par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar atten\u00adtion to the Migrat\u00aded Archives and the bureau\u00adcrat\u00adic vio\u00adlence of colo\u00adnial state prac\u00adtices. Dis\u00adcus\u00adsions of Indige\u00adnous-led archival futures empha\u00adsized self-deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion, Indige\u00adnous Cul\u00adtur\u00adal and Intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal Prop\u00ader\u00adty (ICIP<\/span>), as well as  the ten\u00adsions inher\u00adent in con\u00adduct\u00ading research with\u00adin West\u00adern aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic frame\u00adworks. The ses\u00adsion also addressed the promis\u00ades and lim\u00adits of digitization\u2014described as a form of \u201ccru\u00adel optimism\u201d\u2014alongside emerg\u00ading par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpa\u00adto\u00adry and visu\u00adal archival prac\u00adtices that recon\u00adfig\u00adure access, author\u00adi\u00adty, and the very mean\u00ading of the archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across all four ses\u00adsions, the notion of vio\u00adlent entan\u00adgle\u00adments proved a pro\u00adduc\u00adtive ana\u00adlyt\u00adi\u00adcal lens. It cap\u00adtured not only the his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal vio\u00adlence embed\u00added in colo\u00adnial archives, but also the ongo\u00ading entan\u00adgle\u00adments between mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal objects, knowl\u00adedge sys\u00adtems, and con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary research prac\u00adtices. Par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants reflect\u00aded on the extent to which researchers them\u00adselves may either repro\u00adduce or active\u00adly chal\u00adlenge these dynam\u00adics through their own meth\u00adods and inter\u00adpre\u00adtive choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work\u00adshop con\u00adclud\u00aded with a dis\u00adcus\u00adsion on the aims and for\u00admats of future col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtive work, empha\u00adsiz\u00ading the val\u00adue of inter\u00addis\u00adci\u00adpli\u00adnary exchange and col\u00adlec\u00adtive reflec\u00adtion. By bring\u00ading togeth\u00ader per\u00adspec\u00adtives from his\u00adto\u00adry, archival stud\u00adies, and relat\u00aded fields, Vio\u00adlent Entan\u00adgle\u00adments cre\u00adat\u00aded a space for crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly rethink\u00ading the archive\u2014not as a sta\u00adt\u00adic site of preser\u00adva\u00adtion, but as a dynam\u00adic field of mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal, affec\u00adtive, and epis\u00adtemic rela\u00adtions, whose entan\u00adgle\u00adments with colo\u00adnial pow\u00ader remain very much alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
