Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n From the fif\u00adteenth cen\u00adtu\u00adry onward, Euro\u00adpean colo\u00adnial expan\u00adsion was insep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adble from prac\u00adtices of doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion, clas\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion, and record-keep\u00ading that ren\u00addered ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adries, peo\u00adples, and non\u00adhu\u00adman life leg\u00adi\u00adble to impe\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal regimes, giv\u00ading rise to colo\u00adnial archives. Far from neu\u00adtral repos\u00adi\u00adto\u00adries, these archives func\u00adtioned as epis\u00adtemic instru\u00adments that enabled extrac\u00adtion, dis\u00adpos\u00adses\u00adsion, and dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion, while simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly obscur\u00ading the phys\u00adi\u00adcal vio\u00adlence through which they were con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous\u00adly pro\u00adduced and repro\u00adduced. The records pre\u00adserved today\u2014textual, audio-visu\u00adal, oral, botan\u00adi\u00adcal, zoo\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal, and digital\u2014bear the traces of these process\u00ades, reg\u00adis\u00adter\u00ading not only admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtive con\u00adtrol and sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic ambi\u00adtion, but also loss, dis\u00adplace\u00adment, extinc\u00adtion, and era\u00adsure. At the same time, colo\u00adnial archives remain deeply ambiva\u00adlent sites: while they have his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly sta\u00adbi\u00adlized unequal pow\u00ader rela\u00adtions and mar\u00adgin\u00adal\u00adized non-dom\u00adi\u00adnant forms of knowl\u00adedge, they also con\u00adtain the doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtary con\u00addi\u00adtions through which past injus\u00adtices can be traced, con\u00adtest\u00aded, and made visible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In this work\u00adshop, we use vio\u00adlence as an ana\u00adlyt\u00adi\u00adcal lens to explore the eth\u00adi\u00adcal, epis\u00adte\u00admo\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal, and his\u00adto\u00adri\u00ado\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal chal\u00adlenges of work\u00ading with archival remains that are insep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adble from colo\u00adnial dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion yet con\u00adtin\u00adue to struc\u00adture con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary research prac\u00adtices. By attend\u00ading to mate\u00adri\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty, sen\u00adso\u00adry expe\u00adri\u00adence, spa\u00adtial design, and archival medi\u00ada\u00adtion, this work\u00adshop also opens pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties for crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly reimag\u00adin\u00ading the archive beyond its colo\u00adnial lega\u00adcies. Dur\u00ading the work\u00adshop, we will have group dis\u00adcus\u00adsions on pub\u00adlished arti\u00adcles that are pro\u00advid\u00aded via a read\u00ader before\u00adhand to fur\u00adther our under\u00adstand\u00ading of the inex\u00adtri\u00adca\u00adble entan\u00adgle\u00adments of archives, colo\u00adnial\u00adism and vio\u00adlence we encounter in archival research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
