Abstract<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After twelve years, the DFG<\/span> long-term project \u201cMod\u00adern India in Ger\u00adman Archives\u201d (MIDA<\/span>) will come to an end in Octo\u00adber 2026. At our clos\u00ading con\u00adfer\u00adence, enti\u00adtled \u201c\u00dcber MIDA<\/span> hin\u00adaus\u201d, we will look back on the achieve\u00adments of the past twelve years, whilst also look\u00ading ahead to the future. MIDA<\/span> set itself the task of mak\u00ading the rich\u00adness of hold\u00adings in Ger\u00adman archives on the his\u00adto\u00adry of mod\u00adern India vis\u00adi\u00adble and sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly trace\u00adable for the peri\u00adod from 1706 \u2013 the start of the Dan\u00adish-Halle Mis\u00adsion \u2013 to 1989 \u2013 the end of the Ger\u00adman two-state sys\u00adtem. This endeav\u00adour was under\u00adpinned by the con\u00advic\u00adtion that the schol\u00adar\u00adly poten\u00adtial lying dor\u00admant in these col\u00adlec\u00adtions far exceeds the cur\u00adrent state of research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above all, how\u00adev\u00ader, the con\u00adfer\u00adence aims to look to the future and explore the fur\u00adther poten\u00adtial that Ger\u00adman archives offer for research\u00ading the his\u00adto\u00adry of Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan rela\u00adtions. In our view, it is cru\u00adcial for long-term projects such as MIDA<\/span> that they leave behind a lega\u00adcy that con\u00adtin\u00adues to have an impact and yields results upon which future research can build. Through book reviews and research pan\u00adels, the con\u00adfer\u00adence aims to explore this poten\u00adtial whilst also putting the results of MIDA<\/span> to good use as a start\u00ading point for fur\u00adther research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The con\u00adfer\u00adence began on 1 July with a screen\u00ading of The Sound of Friend\u00adship: Warm Wave\u00adlengths in a Cold, Cold War<\/em> at the Lumi\u00e8re cin\u00ade\u00adma in G\u00f6t\u00adtin\u00adgen. In this doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtary, direc\u00adtor and long-stand\u00ading MIDA<\/span> staff mem\u00adber Anan\u00addi\u00adta Baj\u00adpai traces the his\u00adto\u00adry of the lis\u00adten\u00aders\u2019 clubs of Radio Berlin Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal in India, the GDR<\/span>\u2019s state-run radio sta\u00adtion. In the dis\u00adcus\u00adsion that fol\u00adlowed, Lalit Vachani and Josefin Graef dis\u00adcussed var\u00adi\u00adous aspects of the film with the audi\u00adence, rang\u00ading from the post-1989 his\u00adto\u00adry of Radio Berlin Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal to the spe\u00adcial role of doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtary film in his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sec\u00adond day of the con\u00adfer\u00adence began with an intro\u00adduc\u00adtion by Ravi Ahu\u00adja to MIDA<\/span>\u2019s work over the past 12 years and a review of the objec\u00adtives achieved. Ahu\u00adja par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly empha\u00adsised the role of such projects in times of shift\u00ading polit\u00adi\u00adcal cir\u00adcum\u00adstances in both India and Ger\u00admany. Clau\u00addia Althaus from the Ger\u00adman Research Foun\u00adda\u00adtion high\u00adlight\u00aded the excel\u00adlent coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion with\u00adin the project, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly over its long duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first part of the con\u00adfer\u00adence involved a dis\u00adcus\u00adsion of four recent pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtions pro\u00adduced as part of the MIDA<\/span> project. The pan\u00adels, mod\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded by J\u00fcr\u00adgen Nagel, each addressed prac\u00adti\u00adcal research issues as well as sub\u00adstan\u00adtive debates aris\u00ading from the publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tobias Delfs\u2019 mono\u00adgraph Kolo\u00adniale Natur\u00adforschung und S\u00fcdasien <\/em>takes the archives of the botan\u00adi\u00adcal gar\u00adden in Kolkata as its start\u00ading point to trace the involve\u00adment of Ger\u00adman botanists in the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of impe\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal knowl\u00adedge with\u00adin the British Empire dur\u00ading the first half of the 18th cen\u00adtu\u00adry. Mar\u00adtin Krieger\u2019s com\u00admen\u00adtary empha\u00adsised the par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar spa\u00adtial and entan\u00adgled dimen\u00adsion of the research approach, which is already hint\u00aded at by the use of \u2018und\u2019 rather than \u2018in\u2019 in the title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Mann\u2019s book Sol\u00addaten\u00adleben<\/em> exam\u00adines the role of Euro\u00adpean sol\u00addiers in the colo\u00adnial wars of the sec\u00adond half of the 18th cen\u00adtu\u00adry in Asia and Africa. The use of Ger\u00adman-lan\u00adguage sources helps to fill gaps in research, which still relies heav\u00adi\u00adly on sources of Eng\u00adlish and Dutch ori\u00adgin. In his com\u00admen\u00adtary, Mar\u00adi\u00adan F\u00fcs\u00adsel high\u00adlight\u00aded the sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcance of such an approach for mil\u00adi\u00adtary his\u00adto\u00adry, a dis\u00adci\u00adpline that is par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly sub\u00adject to his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal trends but which, pre\u00adcise\u00adly through a socio-his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal lens, can pro\u00advide impor\u00adtant impe\u00adtus for research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heike Liebaus and Tobias Delfs\u2019 anthol\u00ado\u00adgy Ben\u00adjamin Schultze\u2019s Dia\u00adlogue Book on Madras. A Crit\u00adi\u00adcal Approach to a Cul\u00adtur\u00adal-His\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal Mis\u00adsion\u00adary Source<\/em> rep\u00adre\u00adsents a dis\u00adtinc\u00adtive type of pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion with\u00adin the MIDA<\/span> frame\u00adwork. The anthol\u00ado\u00adgy was based on a clear\u00adly defined and explic\u00adit the\u00admat\u00adic brief for the con\u00adtrib\u00adu\u00adtors, invit\u00ading them to present their diverse per\u00adspec\u00adtives on the dia\u00adlogue book by the mis\u00adsion\u00adary Ben\u00adjamin Schultze. Dis\u00adcus\u00adsant Amal Shahid opened the dis\u00adcus\u00adsion with her con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion on how one might suc\u00adceed in doing jus\u00adtice to the crit\u00adi\u00adcal poten\u00adtial of such a mul\u00adti-per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adval approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her pub\u00adlished doc\u00adtor\u00adal the\u00adsis, Voca\u00adtion\u00adal Train\u00ading in the Indi\u00adan Steel and Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Indus\u00adtries: His\u00adto\u00adries of Indo-Ger\u00adman Co-oper\u00ada\u00adtion, c.1950\u20131989<\/em>, Jose\u00adfine Hoff\u00admann exam\u00adines Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan co-oper\u00ada\u00adtion in the field of voca\u00adtion\u00adal train\u00ading. In his com\u00admen\u00adtary, Roland Wit\u00adtje referred to the broad\u00ader con\u00adtext of Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan polit\u00adi\u00adcal and eco\u00adnom\u00adic co-oper\u00ada\u00adtion fol\u00adlow\u00ading inde\u00adpen\u00addence, to the under\u00adstand\u00ading of which the the\u00adsis makes an impor\u00adtant contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first pan\u00adel, mod\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded by Mar\u00adtin-Christof F\u00fcch\u00adsle and focus\u00ading on Ger\u00adman nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adists in British India, addressed var\u00adi\u00adous aspects of the his\u00adto\u00adry of entan\u00adgle\u00adments relat\u00ading to the activ\u00adi\u00adties of Ger\u00adman-speak\u00ading mis\u00adsion\u00adar\u00adies and forestry sci\u00aden\u00adtists in South Asia. In her con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion, Anne-Char\u00adlott Trepp exam\u00adined the sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcance of draw\u00ading as a method\u00adolog\u00adi\u00adcal tech\u00adnique for record\u00ading knowl\u00adedge and the role of local actors in this process. Steven Rein\u00adhardt high\u00adlight\u00aded the con\u00adnec\u00adtion between the Dan\u00adish-Halle mis\u00adsion\u00adar\u00adies and the Stras\u00adbourg nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adist Jean\/Johann Her\u00admann, and dis\u00adcussed the rec\u00adi\u00adp\u00adro\u00adcal exchange of arte\u00adfacts between Halle, Stras\u00adbourg and South India. Thomas Ruh\u00adland turned his atten\u00adtion to the Mora\u00advian Mis\u00adsion and dis\u00adcussed its inte\u00adgra\u00adtion into Indo-Euro\u00adpean nat\u00adur\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adry trans\u00adfer net\u00adworks, as well as its eco\u00adnom\u00adic dynam\u00adics. Anna Sail\u00ader dis\u00adcussed the role of Ger\u00adman forestry offi\u00adcials in the late 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry in the for\u00adest man\u00adage\u00adment of the British Empire, exam\u00adin\u00ading the appli\u00adca\u00adtion of forestry con\u00adcepts in India and Java from a com\u00adpar\u00ada\u00adtive per\u00adspec\u00adtive. The ensu\u00ading dis\u00adcus\u00adsion cen\u00adtred on the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties and lim\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions of approach\u00ades to the his\u00adto\u00adry of entan\u00adgle\u00adments through the use of Ger\u00adman-lan\u00adguage source mate\u00adri\u00adals and the inte\u00adgra\u00adtion of local actors and con\u00adtexts into his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal narratives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike the first pan\u00adel, the sec\u00adond research pan\u00adel on aspects of the his\u00adto\u00adry of the Rourkela steel\u00adworks \u2013 built with West Ger\u00adman assis\u00adtance \u2013 addressed a much more nar\u00adrow\u00adly defined top\u00adic. As the pan\u00adel mod\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtor, Nina Klein\u00f6der opened the dis\u00adcus\u00adsion by high\u00adlight\u00ading the poten\u00adtial of approach\u00ades based on cor\u00adpo\u00adrate his\u00adto\u00adry to enrich our under\u00adstand\u00ading of colo\u00adnial and post-colo\u00adnial process\u00ades. In his con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion, Karl M\u00fcller-Bahlke out\u00adlined the role of inte\u00adgrat\u00aded steel\u00adworks in Indi\u00adan devel\u00adop\u00adment pol\u00adi\u00adcy fol\u00adlow\u00ading inde\u00adpen\u00addence and placed this with\u00adin a broad\u00ader con\u00adtext of the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between the steel indus\u00adtry and state sov\u00ader\u00adeign\u00adty. Draw\u00ading on long-term ethno\u00adgraph\u00adic stud\u00adies, Chris\u00adt\u00adian Str\u00fcm\u00adpel high\u00adlight\u00aded the com\u00adplex process\u00ades of class and iden\u00adti\u00adty for\u00adma\u00adtion in Rourkela. In his con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion, Mirko Schwag\u00admann addressed the high-pro\u00adfile rival\u00adry between the Rourkela project and the Sovi\u00adet-backed con\u00adstruc\u00adtion of the steel\u00adworks in Bhi\u00adlai, focus\u00ading in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar on the prepa\u00adra\u00adtion of the Ger\u00adman assem\u00adbly and oper\u00ada\u00adtions teams. Jose\u00adfine Hoff\u00admann out\u00adlined the spe\u00adcif\u00adic his\u00adto\u00adry of the (ulti\u00admate\u00adly failed) \u2018Rourkela Mas\u00adter School\u2019 as a site of con\u00adflict between Indi\u00adan and West Ger\u00adman stake\u00adhold\u00aders over the pri\u00ador\u00adi\u00adties of devel\u00adop\u00adment pol\u00adi\u00adcy. The panel\u2019s strong the\u00admat\u00adic focus enabled an in-depth dis\u00adcus\u00adsion in the ensu\u00ading debate on issues relat\u00ading to the inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal con\u00adtext of the Indi\u00adan devel\u00adop\u00adment pro\u00adgramme, includ\u00ading its impli\u00adca\u00adtions for envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal and cli\u00admate policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mar\u00adtin Christof-F\u00fcch\u00adsle and Jannes Thode pro\u00advid\u00aded an overview of what are per\u00adhaps the most impor\u00adtant find\u00adings of the MIDA<\/span> long-term pro\u00adgramme, from the per\u00adspec\u00adtive of the research still to be car\u00adried out. In addi\u00adtion to the data\u00adbase, the Archival Reflex\u00adi\u00adcon and the the\u00admat\u00adic resources were also pre\u00adsent\u00aded. Tobias Gradl then explained the prac\u00adti\u00adcal aspects of long-term dig\u00adi\u00adtal archiv\u00ading to the con\u00adfer\u00adence par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants. The sup\u00adpos\u00aded\u00adly tech\u00adni\u00adcal details of this have far-reach\u00ading con\u00adse\u00adquences for researchers\u2019 access beyond the end of a fund\u00ading peri\u00adod and are there\u00adfore a cen\u00adtral part of his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal research today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the clos\u00ading pan\u00adel, enti\u00adtled \u2018Beyond MIDA<\/span>\u2019, the pan\u00adel\u00adlists, mod\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded by Ravi Ahu\u00adja, revis\u00adit\u00aded sev\u00ader\u00adal aspects of the pre\u00advi\u00adous days\u2019 dis\u00adcus\u00adsions. Anan\u00addi\u00adta Baj\u00adpai, Razak Khan, Ste\u00adfan L\u00fcder, Bai\u00adjayan\u00adti Roy, San\u00addra Ma\u00df and Nina Klein\u00f6der referred to points of dis\u00adcus\u00adsion that remained open with\u00adin the MIDA<\/span> project itself, whilst also draw\u00ading on their own research expe\u00adri\u00adences. Top\u00adics of dis\u00adcus\u00adsion includ\u00aded the mean\u00ading and poten\u00adtial of the con\u00adcept of \u2018etan\u00adgle\u00adment\u2019, the impend\u00ading loss of archival hold\u00adings, and the ques\u00adtion of how to incor\u00adpo\u00adrate the strengths of var\u00adi\u00adous his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal dis\u00adci\u00adplines \u2013 such as busi\u00adness, mil\u00adi\u00adtary or envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal his\u00adto\u00adry \u2013 into the field of Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adog\u00adra\u00adphy. The ques\u00adtion of the pre\u00adcise mean\u00ading of \u2018Ger\u00adman\u2019 and \u2018Indi\u00adan\u2019 \u2013 which has accom\u00adpa\u00adnied the MIDA<\/span> pro\u00adgramme from the out\u00adset \u2013 was also raised once again in this con\u00adtext. Whilst source mate\u00adri\u00adals and his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal entan\u00adgle\u00adments are gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to cat\u00ade\u00adgorise with\u00adin nation\u00adal frame\u00adworks, this is par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly true for such a long peri\u00adod of study, span\u00adning from the ear\u00adly 18th to the late 20th cen\u00adtu\u00adry. Whilst these nation\u00adal ambi\u00adgu\u00adi\u00adties were dealt with prag\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly with\u00adin the frame\u00adwork of the long-term project, they nev\u00ader\u00adthe\u00adless serve as a prime exam\u00adple of the numer\u00adous method\u00adolog\u00adi\u00adcal and the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal deci\u00adsions that must be made time and again in the course of such a research project, and for which there is usu\u00adal\u00adly no sim\u00adple answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this in mind, Heike Liebau and Michael Mann were ulti\u00admate\u00adly able to draw a pos\u00adi\u00adtive con\u00adclu\u00adsion regard\u00ading the project as a whole, whilst also high\u00adlight\u00ading the fur\u00adther work and sub\u00adse\u00adquent research that will stem from what has been achieved so far. The pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtions pro\u00adduced as part of the pro\u00adgramme and the online research por\u00adtal form the basis for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
