By the end of the nine\u00adteenth cen\u00adtu\u00adry the peaks of the Himalayan range, whose height sur\u00adpassed any of those in the Alps, had become the new \u201cplay\u00adground\u201d for many west\u00adern nations to enact aspects of pow\u00ader and mas\u00adculin\u00adi\u00adty. This par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar peri\u00adod wit\u00adnessed the arrival and attempts of many west\u00adern climb\u00ading expe\u00addi\u00adtions to \u201cbag a peak.\u201d My project attempts to specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly look at the Ger\u00adman moun\u00adtaineer\u00ading expe\u00addi\u00adtions in the Himalayan range between the 1920s and 1950s and bring togeth\u00ader the com\u00adplex\u00adi\u00adties of colo\u00adnial fron\u00adtier pol\u00adi\u00adtics and var\u00adi\u00adous dimen\u00adsions of the expe\u00addi\u00adtion labour force, fac\u00adtor\u00ading in the intractably of the moun\u00adtain-scape. Over\u00adall this project looks at the prac\u00adtice of moun\u00adtaineer\u00ading expe\u00addi\u00adtions in the Himalayas and attempts to study high-alti\u00adtude labour in the ver\u00adti\u00adcal fron\u00adtiers of the empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The moun\u00adtains were routes and spaces that were shared between the climbers and sub\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnate labour\u00ading com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties, a rela\u00adtion\u00adship that was high\u00adly asym\u00admet\u00adri\u00adcal, but was bound togeth\u00ader by social aspi\u00adra\u00adtions relat\u00aded to the project of scal\u00ading a peak. Var\u00adi\u00adous Himalayan com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties \u2013 the Baltis and Chi\u00adla\u00adsis of Kash\u00admir, Bho\u00adtias and Sher\u00adpas of East\u00adern Himalayas\u2013 were recruit\u00aded from their respec\u00adtive regions for work on the moun\u00adtain. For the com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties that were mobi\u00adlized for car\u00adry\u00ading loads and open\u00ading routes, the moun\u00adtains were seen as paths, resources, refuge and the peaks were the \u2018abode of gods\u2019. Ques\u00adtions of recruit\u00adment meth\u00adods, com\u00adpen\u00adsa\u00adtion (giv\u00aden the high mor\u00adtal\u00adi\u00adty rate of their work), con\u00adtracts and nature of work arise through their engage\u00adment in the expe\u00addi\u00adtions. These expe\u00addi\u00adtions also held a spe\u00adcial role in Anglo-Ger\u00adman rela\u00adtions as cul\u00adtur\u00adal bro\u00adkers between the two nations in the inter-war peri\u00adod.
