In post-war East Ger\u00admany, and lat\u00ader in the Ger\u00adman Demo\u00adc\u00adra\u00adt\u00adic Repub\u00adlic (<span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span>), India occu\u00adpied a cru\u00adcial and inter\u00adest\u00ading place in these cin\u00ade\u00admat\u00adic pro\u00adduc\u00adtions that pro\u00adduced spe\u00adcif\u00adic types of images of India. These news\u00adreels were screened in cin\u00ade\u00adma hous\u00ades before and dur\u00ading inter\u00adludes of main fea\u00adture&nbsp;films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project seeks to study and ana\u00adlyze the aes\u00adthet\u00adics, con\u00adtent, and cul\u00adtur\u00adal-polit\u00adi\u00adcal argu\u00adments of the news\u00adreels, along\u00adside its pro\u00adduc\u00adtion process\u00ades. By study\u00ading these aspects, the project seeks to out\u00adline the his\u00adto\u00adry of Indo-GDR entan\u00adgle\u00adments in this spe\u00adcif\u00adic area, as well as to dis\u00adcuss the nature and under\u00adstand\u00ading of \u201centan\u00adgle\u00adment\u201d in the con\u00adtext of news\u00adreel productions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with the prob\u00adlem\u00adat\u00adics of entan\u00adgle\u00adments, this work seeks to dis\u00adcuss and bring forth the issue of \u2018move\u00adments\u2019 and \u2018con\u00adcepts\u2019: it will see how \u2018move\u00adment\u2019 played a role in cin\u00ade\u00admat\u00adic aes\u00adthet\u00adics dur\u00ading cold war times, when mov\u00ading objects, the move\u00adment of peo\u00adple from one coun\u00adtry to anoth\u00ader, modes of trans\u00adporta\u00adtions, mobi\u00adliza\u00adtion, etc., were con\u00adstrued as sym\u00adbols of mod\u00adernism and devel\u00adop\u00adment. This work will ask how the move\u00adment of cin\u00ade\u00admat\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals (shots\/footages\/productions) con\u00adtributed and chal\u00adlenged nation\u00adal bor\u00adders in a seg\u00adment\u00aded world. Fol\u00adlow\u00ading Sigrun Lehnert\u2019s idea of the news\u00adreel as an agent of his\u00adto\u00adry, the project will also explore the cir\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtion or exchange of cer\u00adtain ideas. Con\u00adcepts such as \u201cimpe\u00adri\u00adal\u00adism\u201d, \u201cdevel\u00adop\u00adment\u201d, and \u201cthird world\u201d were cru\u00adcial in these pro\u00adduc\u00adtions that cre\u00adat\u00aded and dis\u00adsem\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar nar\u00adra\u00adtive of his\u00adto\u00adry. They were deployed to craft a cer\u00adtain sense of the his\u00adto\u00adry that was being formed. While look\u00ading into this mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal, I will inves\u00adti\u00adgate: what were the con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary dynam\u00adics and prob\u00adlem\u00adat\u00adics behind the use of such con\u00adcepts? How were the images (still or mov\u00ading) being used and what kind of evi\u00addence did they create?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Empir\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, this project con\u00adtributes to the study of cul\u00adtur\u00adal pol\u00adi\u00adtics of the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> with regard to India. &nbsp;Con\u00adstruct\u00aded images of India that were medi\u00adat\u00aded through con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary geo-polit\u00adi\u00adcal dynam\u00adics served var\u00adi\u00adous pur\u00adpos\u00ades, includ\u00ading but not lim\u00adit\u00aded to transna\u00adtion\u00adal state rela\u00adtions. There\u00adfore the news\u00adreels form part of a larg\u00ader process of entan\u00adgle\u00adment between states. How\u00adev\u00ader, the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion process of news\u00adreels also relates entan\u00adgle\u00adments that go beyond states and nation\u00adal and\/or polit\u00adi\u00adcal bound\u00adaries. &nbsp;News\u00adreels were pro\u00adduced through film mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal acquired through var\u00adi\u00adous nation\u00adal or inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal sources, and craft\u00aded in a way to por\u00adtray the spe\u00adcif\u00adic his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal moment and per\u00adspec\u00adtive of the coun\u00adtry (<span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span>) dur\u00ading the cold war. There\u00adfore this study explores how news\u00adreels com\u00adpli\u00adcate the ques\u00adtion of entan\u00adgle\u00adment, as there were many transna\u00adtion\u00adal and local actors play\u00ading cru\u00adcial roles, and these actors had very lim\u00adit\u00aded con\u00adtrol over the final prod\u00aduct. The study of news\u00adreels pro\u00advides an oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to dis\u00aden\u00adtan\u00adgle and ques\u00adtion the con\u00adcept of entan\u00adgle\u00adment, inso\u00adfar as its under\u00adstand\u00ading could go beyond nation\u00adal and\/or bi-lat\u00ader\u00adal relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research is based on Ger\u00adman film archives and col\u00adlec\u00adtions and includes, but is not lim\u00adit\u00aded to, the Progress Films Archive and the Bun\u00adde\u00adsarchiv in Berlin, where the news\u00adreels and oth\u00ader pro\u00adduc\u00adtion mate\u00adri\u00adals are housed. I will lim\u00adit myself to those <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> news\u00adreels (more than 100 in num\u00adber) that direct\u00adly deal with India as a top\u00adic, but I will also look into oth\u00ader news\u00adreels from the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> as well as from West Ger\u00admany for gen\u00ader\u00adal con\u00adtext and com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson.
