My research project exam\u00adines the entan\u00adgled nature of Indo-Ger\u00adman intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adry. I explore intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal and cul\u00adtur\u00adal trans\u00adla\u00adtions in the sphere of reform ped\u00ada\u00adgogy or \u201cNew Edu\u00adca\u00adtion\u201c dom\u00adi\u00adnant at the turn of nine\u00adteenth-cen\u00adtu\u00adry Ger\u00admany and fol\u00adlow their careers in late colo\u00adnial and post-colo\u00adnial India. I do so by trac\u00ading the intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal net\u00adworks among Indi\u00adan and Ger\u00adman edu\u00adca\u00adtion\u00adists and intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals in Ger\u00admany, espe\u00adcial\u00adly in Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main exem\u00adplars in this his\u00adto\u00adry are Sayyid Abid Husain (1896\u20131978) and Eduard Spranger (1882\u20131963) along with a larg\u00ader enmeshed net\u00adwork of intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals, stu\u00addents and oth\u00ader actors who have left behind an archive spread over a cen\u00adtu\u00adry and across con\u00adti\u00adnents. Detail\u00ading the role played by the hith\u00ader\u00adto over\u00adlooked trans\u00adla\u00adtion of Ger\u00adman texts into Urdu by Abid Husain is of par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar inter\u00adest to this project in its attempt to offer a com\u00adpar\u00ada\u00adtive study of Ger\u00adman con\u00adcepts and their Indi\u00adan equiv\u00ada\u00adlents in Urdu lan\u00adguage. Spranger\u2019s psy\u00adcho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal the\u00ado\u00adry, and its rela\u00adtion to ethics and val\u00adues, were cre\u00adative\u00adly recast in Husain\u2019s own phi\u00adlos\u00ado\u00adphy of edu\u00adca\u00adtion and prac\u00adtices of ped\u00ada\u00adgogy that were put into prac\u00adtice at Jamia Mil\u00adia Islamia, as well as with\u00adin his own house\u00adhold in Delhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I plan to relo\u00adcate the per\u00adson\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adry of Abid Husain and his fam\u00adi\u00adly with\u00adin the larg\u00ader ques\u00adtion of minor\u00adi\u00adty iden\u00adti\u00adty and cit\u00adi\u00adzen\u00adship. Thus, my project will also locate the com\u00adpar\u00ada\u00adtive his\u00adto\u00adry of minori\u00adties in and through edu\u00adca\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adist think\u00ading and cit\u00adi\u00adzen\u00adship ques\u00adtion. I do so by com\u00adpar\u00ading how con\u00adcepts, which were so cru\u00adcial with\u00adin Ger\u00admany regard\u00ading the role and rights of the elite Jew\u00adish minor\u00adi\u00adty, were re-nego\u00adti\u00adat\u00aded by intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals among the mid\u00addle-class Mus\u00adlims espe\u00adcial\u00adly at Jamia Mil\u00adia Islamia who were also involved in the nation\u00adal cul\u00adture debates on edu\u00adca\u00adtion and cit\u00adi\u00adzen\u00adship in colo\u00adnial and post-colo\u00adnial India. The project remains com\u00admit\u00adted to explore the ques\u00adtion of class and gen\u00adder pol\u00adi\u00adtics with\u00adin com\u00adpar\u00ada\u00adtive his\u00adto\u00adries of minor\u00adi\u00adty edu\u00adca\u00adtion and cit\u00adi\u00adzen\u00adship ideals. Cru\u00adcial\u00adly, the project does not empha\u00adsize a \u201cderiv\u00ada\u00adtive dis\u00adcourse\u201d and its export to the colony from metrop\u00ado\u00adlis. Instead, it explores the transna\u00adtion\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adry of ideas and con\u00adcep\u00adtu\u00adal change that marks the process of trans\u00adla\u00adtion and inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion. In illu\u00admi\u00adnat\u00ading the man\u00adner in which Ger\u00adman thought served as a palimpsest for Urdu writ\u00adings, the project remains com\u00admit\u00adted to exam\u00adin\u00ading the pol\u00adi\u00adtics of trans\u00adla\u00adtion of con\u00adcepts and intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal thought with\u00adin larg\u00ader crit\u00adi\u00adcal social history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"wp_typography_post_enhancements_disabled":false},"categories":[52,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-321","project","type-project","status-publish","hentry","category-projects","category-projekte"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
