The expe\u00adri\u00adence of Indi\u00adan devel\u00adop\u00adment plan\u00adning after 1947 has attract\u00aded the atten\u00adtion of inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal econ\u00ado\u00admists and his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans for a long time. The study of its pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties and lim\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions has been the launch\u00ading point for dis\u00adcus\u00adsions about every\u00adthing from the per\u00adsis\u00adtence of glob\u00adal inequal\u00adi\u00adty to the ori\u00adgins of neolib\u00ader\u00adal\u00adism. As the largest non-com\u00admu\u00adnist project of its kind, ques\u00adtions about the respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of state insti\u00adtu\u00adtions and pri\u00advate busi\u00adness have been cen\u00adtral to these dis\u00adcus\u00adsions. At the heart of \u201cNehru\u00advian\u201d devel\u00adop\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adism (named after the first Prime Min\u00adis\u00adter of India, Jawa\u00adhar\u00adlal Nehru) were the pub\u00adlic sec\u00adtor steel plants, meant to sup\u00adply the Indi\u00adan econ\u00ado\u00admy with the mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal basis for rapid industrialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At these sites, the Indi\u00adan plan\u00adners were faced with a strate\u00adgic con\u00adtra\u00addic\u00adtion: on the one hand, domes\u00adtic steel pro\u00adduc\u00adtion was cen\u00adtral for the cho\u00adsen mod\u00adel of \u2018Import Sub\u00adsti\u00adtut\u00ading Indus\u00adtri\u00adal\u00adiza\u00adtion\u2019 that was to reduce eco\u00adnom\u00adic depen\u00addence on for\u00adeign pow\u00aders. On the oth\u00ader hand, the giant inte\u00adgrat\u00aded plants could only be built with for\u00adeign tech\u00adni\u00adcal aid. The solu\u00adtion was geopo\u00adlit\u00adi\u00adcal diver\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion: Great Britain, the Sovi\u00adet Union and West-Ger\u00admany were all to pro\u00advide help for one of the first gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of plants respec\u00adtive\u00adly. The West-Ger\u00adman plant in Rourkela was built with the help of a con\u00adsor\u00adtium of steel and engi\u00adneer\u00ading firms, most notably Krupp and Demag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The archival sources of these firms pro\u00advide a unique look into how the state-busi\u00adness nexus of the Indi\u00adan devel\u00adop\u00adment effort, the top\u00adic of such heat\u00aded con\u00adtro\u00adver\u00adsy on the macro-lev\u00adel, played out in one of its most cen\u00adtral are\u00adnas: the shopfloor of the inte\u00adgrat\u00aded steel plant. The project seeks to explore these sources to deter\u00admine how the man\u00adi\u00adfold require\u00adments of such plants shaped the pol\u00adi\u00adcy debates of the dif\u00adfer\u00adent actors with stakes in their oper\u00ada\u00adtion: from the local, region\u00adal and nation\u00adal state struc\u00adtures in India to Indi\u00adan, Ger\u00adman and British pri\u00advate busi\u00adness. In a com\u00adpar\u00ada\u00adtive effort with the British sources the ori\u00adgins of these plants are traced back into the tur\u00adbu\u00adlent sec\u00adond half of the 40s, a time in which the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between states and their steel indus\u00adtries was much less decid\u00aded, not only in India, but in Britain and Ger\u00admany as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":42,"featured_media":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"wp_typography_post_enhancements_disabled":false},"categories":[52],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4884","project","type-project","status-publish","hentry","category-projects"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
