The trade rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtions estab\u00adlished in 1956, how\u00adev\u00ader, became the \u2018offi\u00adcial mouth\u00adpiece\u2019 of the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> in India. Con\u00adtacts between actors from both the sides can thus be traced much before offi\u00adcial recog\u00adni\u00adtion was mate\u00adri\u00adalised. This project calls for a his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal analy\u00adsis of encoun\u00adters, entan\u00adgle\u00adments and exchanges between uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty actors (from Berlin and New Del\u00adhi), which are cat\u00ade\u00adgorised under the larg\u00ader umbrel\u00adla theme of \u2018cul\u00adtur\u00adal\u2019 rela\u00adtions <em>(kul\u00adturelle Beziehun\u00adgen or nich\u00adstaatliche Beziehun\u00adgen) <\/em>with\u00adin the archi\u00adtec\u00adture of Ger\u00adman archives. It aims to present a com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive his\u00adto\u00adry of the entan\u00adgle\u00adments that exist\u00aded among uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals and how these exchanges informed life-tra\u00adjec\u00adto\u00adries that criss-crossed between the Indol\u00ado\u00adgy and South Asian Stud\u00adies Depart\u00adment at the Hum\u00adboldt-Uni\u00adver\u00adsit\u00e4t zu Berlin and its part\u00adner insti\u00adtu\u00adtions like the Jawa\u00adhar\u00adlal Nehru Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty and the Del\u00adhi Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in&nbsp;Delhi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main ques\u00adtion posed by the project is:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How were these rela\u00adtions between uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty actors from India and the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> effect\u00aded by the fact that the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> was for\u00admal\u00adly not recog\u00adnised as a sov\u00ader\u00adeign state by the gov\u00adern\u00adment of India until 1972, and how did they in turn impact the ques\u00adtion of recognition?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A work\u00ading hypoth\u00ade\u00adsis is that an imme\u00addi\u00adate con\u00adcern was the ques\u00adtion of vis\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. How to make the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> known to the peo\u00adple of India, so that they could push for it to be recog\u00adnised offi\u00adcial\u00adly? Promi\u00adnent exam\u00adples of the same are how Bertolt Brecht was pop\u00adu\u00adlarised in India as the \u2018face of the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span>\u2019 and how the Indo-GDR Friend\u00adship soci\u00adeties toiled to ren\u00adder the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> vis\u00adi\u00adble for Indians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tra\u00addi\u00adtions of intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal inter\u00adac\u00adtions between East Berlin and New Del\u00adhi in the post sec\u00adond world war, Cold War years, remain large\u00adly under\u00adstud\u00adied espe\u00adcial\u00adly from a his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal per\u00adspec\u00adtive. His\u00adtori\u00adciz\u00ading the entan\u00adgled biogra\u00adphies of these intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals can have a unique added val\u00adue as it&nbsp;will:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1. Assist in re-inter\u00adpret\u00ading the cat\u00ade\u00adgo\u00adry of \u2018cul\u00adtur\u00adal rela\u00adtions\u2019 (<em>kul\u00adturelle Beziehun\u00adgen or nicht-Staatliche Beziehun\u00adgen<\/em>) with\u00adin the inter\u00adnal archi\u00adtec\u00adture of Berlin\u2019s archives by elu\u00adci\u00addat\u00ading how the spheres of intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal exchange(s), cul\u00adtur\u00adal pol\u00adi\u00adtics and state pol\u00adi\u00adtics often merged and have impact\u00aded the lives of actors deemed to be out\u00adside the ambit of for\u00admal\u00adized state politics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2. Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adalise the audi\u00adence that engages with the entan\u00adgled his\u00adto\u00adries of uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals from the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> and India. Indian\/international audi\u00adences at large have hith\u00ader\u00adto had rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly min\u00adi\u00admal access to oral his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal accounts and micro his\u00adto\u00adries of such exchanges due to lin\u00adguis\u00adtic lim\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions. The result\u00ading man\u00adu\u00adscript of this project will be in Eng\u00adlish (fol\u00adlowed by an even\u00adtu\u00adal Ger\u00adman trans\u00adla\u00adtion) in order to inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adalise the per\u00adceived audi\u00adence of the&nbsp;work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3. Give due weight to oral his\u00adto\u00adry. This can be an invalu\u00adable source, hith\u00ader\u00adto unex\u00adplored, for trac\u00ading the his\u00adto\u00adry of inter\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adtions between the two aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic worlds in focus. Most of the East Berlin intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals lost their posi\u00adtions after the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), when com\u00admis\u00adsions from West Ger\u00admany decid\u00aded their future. The project aims to resi\u00adt\u00adu\u00adate their his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal pres\u00adence in archives by mak\u00ading a crit\u00adi\u00adcal inter\u00adven\u00adtion through oral his\u00adto\u00adry. The sur\u00adplus of this project is that it is a his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal analy\u00adsis of entan\u00adgle\u00adments not just of peo\u00adple but also an analy\u00adsis of entan\u00adgle\u00adments of acad\u00ade\u00admia, cul\u00adture and pol\u00adi\u00adtics in a very par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal \/ insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal moment (Cold War, nation build\u00ading process\u00ades in nascent states like the <span class=\"caps\">FRG<\/span>, India and the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span>, the unrec\u00adog\u00adnized sta\u00adtus of the&nbsp;<span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">4.
