These sources can also offer schol\u00adars the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of acquir\u00ading new research per\u00adspec\u00adtives, indeed a new lens, for engag\u00ading with mod\u00adern Indi\u00adan his\u00adto\u00adry by not sole\u00adly pri\u00ador\u00adi\u00adtiz\u00ading British colo\u00adnial archives. The MIDA-Archival Guide, which accom\u00adpa\u00adnies the project\u2019s online data\u00adbase, is an open-access forum for reflex\u00adive dis\u00adcus\u00adsions on the rich India-relat\u00aded hold\u00adings of Ger\u00adman archives. One of the main objec\u00adtives of the Archival Guide is to reflect on how the turn towards entan\u00adgled transna\u00adtion\u00adal and glob\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adries not only rais\u00ades new the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal ques\u00adtions, but also con\u00adfronts us with method\u00adolog\u00adi\u00adcal issues on the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between entan\u00adgled his\u00adto\u00adries and archives. At the same time, it is a site for acquir\u00ading com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive overviews of India-relat\u00aded archival hold\u00adings of Ger\u00adman archives for spe\u00adcif\u00adic themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 2018, the <span class=\"caps\">DFG<\/span> fund\u00aded long-term project \u201cMod\u00adern India in Ger\u00adman Archives, 1706\u20131989\u201d (\u201cDas Mod\u00aderne Indi\u00aden in deutschen Archiv\u00aden\u201d, <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span>) has suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly launched an open-access data\u00adbase (with an exten\u00adsive cat\u00ada\u00adlogue and index) that enlists, index\u00ades and describes hold\u00adings relat\u00aded to mod\u00adern Indi\u00adan his\u00adto\u00adry and the his\u00adto\u00adry of Indo-Ger\u00adman entan\u00adgle\u00adments, which are housed in Ger\u00adman archives. The time peri\u00adod in focus is from the estab\u00adlish\u00adment of the Dan\u00adish-Halle Mis\u00adsion in South India (1706) up to the end of the polit\u00adi\u00adcal divi\u00adsion of Ger\u00admany (1989\/90). The data\u00adbase is a plat\u00adform made avail\u00adable on a long-term basis to the inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty of his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans of South Asia as a \u201cgrow\u00ading\u201d and open dig\u00adi\u00adtal resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Archival Guide gives users a the\u00admat\u00adic and prob\u00adlema\u00adtized overview into the hold\u00adings. The objec\u00adtive is to open a space of dis\u00adcus\u00adsion on the hold\u00adings that does not lim\u00adit the his\u00adto\u00adry of Indo-Ger\u00adman entan\u00adgle\u00adments to a bina\u00adry log\u00adic and to crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly reflect on the order\u00ading archi\u00adtec\u00adture of the archives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"objectives\"><a id=\"objectives-of-the-mida-archival-guide\"><\/a>Objectives of the <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> Archival Guide: New Avenues and Older Frameworks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"_ednref1\">Con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal archival guides are often a handy tool kit that enables users to con\u00adduct fruit\u00adful search\u00ades relat\u00aded to archives, their cat\u00ada\u00adlogues and data\u00adbas\u00ades, their order\u00ading prin\u00adci\u00adples and any oth\u00ader find\u00ading aids that may be use\u00adful for his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal research. Some guides have attempt\u00aded to famil\u00adiar\u00adize stu\u00addents with archival vocab\u00adu\u00adlary and his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal meth\u00adods (for exam\u00adple the <em>Berlin\u00ader Archiv Guide<\/em><a name=\"_ednref1\" href=\"#_edn1\">[1]<\/a> or the archival guide of the Soci\u00adety of Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Archivists titled <em>Using Archives: A Guide to Effec\u00adtive Research<\/em>)<a href=\"#_edn1\">[2]<\/a> in order to reduce the sense of awe and intim\u00adi\u00adda\u00adtion induced by the insti\u00adtu\u00adtion. There are oth\u00aders, how\u00adev\u00ader, which are more spe\u00adcif\u00adic and offer details of rel\u00ade\u00advant ref\u00ader\u00adence books, reports of vis\u00adi\u00adtors, back\u00adground infor\u00adma\u00adtion, notes, dis\u00adcus\u00adsions and cor\u00adre\u00adspon\u00addences on what one should know before enter\u00ading the phys\u00adi\u00adcal brick and mor\u00adtar space called the archive (for exam\u00adple the instruc\u00adtive <em>Guides to Russ\u00adian Archives<\/em> made avail\u00adable by the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of War\u00adwick).<a href=\"#_edn1\">[3]<\/a> Cer\u00adtain archives also offer high\u00adly sys\u00adtem\u00adatized archival guides which pro\u00advide users infor\u00adma\u00adtion on the hold\u00adings and their struc\u00adture, inter\u00adac\u00adtive links to cat\u00ada\u00adlogues and guides, research themes with bib\u00adli\u00adogra\u00adphies and a selec\u00adtion of pri\u00adma\u00adry sources as well as use\u00adful data\u00adbas\u00ades and online sources (for exam\u00adple the elab\u00ado\u00adrate <em>League of Nations Archive Resource Guide<\/em>).<a href=\"#_edn1\">[4]<\/a>&nbsp; While some online por\u00adtals sim\u00adply offer a list of sev\u00ader\u00adal archives with basic infor\u00adma\u00adtion and some\u00adtimes a brief descrip\u00adtion of the hold\u00adings (see <em>Ham\u00adburg Wis\u00adsen Dig\u00adi\u00adtal<\/em>)<a href=\"#_edn1\">[5]<\/a>, some archives offer pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties to see an exten\u00adsive list of archival guides which are the\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly orga\u00adnized and direct read\u00aders to enlist\u00aded hold\u00adings (as in the case of The Nation\u00adal Archives, the Unit\u00aded King\u00addom, Scot\u00adland and Wales).<a href=\"#_edn1\">[6]<\/a> At the same time, cer\u00adtain forums have attempt\u00aded to give com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive overviews on archival order\u00ading and the Ger\u00adman archival land\u00adscape (<em>see Clio Online<\/em>).<a name=\"_ednref7\" href=\"#_edn7\">[<\/a><a href=\"#_edn1\">7<\/a><a name=\"_ednref7\" href=\"#_edn7\">]<\/a> In short, the land\u00adscape of archival guides is an eclec\u00adtic one where the kind of infor\u00adma\u00adtion that users can access varies from the gen\u00ader\u00adal to the par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar. It may be summed up more gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly that archival guides are a prag\u00admat\u00adic know-how appa\u00adra\u00adtus, which offers a wide spec\u00adtrum of infor\u00adma\u00adtion rang\u00ading from read\u00ading room hours to the rules of the archive and from cat\u00ada\u00adlogues to instruc\u00adtive indexes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> Archival Guide, while being sim\u00adi\u00adlar to the avail\u00adable pletho\u00adra of archival guides, dif\u00adfers in two con\u00adcrete&nbsp;ways&nbsp;\u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"excursion\"><a id=\"an-excursion-into-german-archival-landscapes\"><\/a>1. An excursion into the German archival landscapes on modern Indian history<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"_ednref8\">First\u00adly, it is a plat\u00adform for pro\u00advid\u00ading users an exten\u00adsive overview on India relat\u00aded hold\u00adings in Ger\u00adman archives on very <em>spe\u00adcif\u00adic research top\u00adics<\/em> (for exam\u00adple if research\u00ading on the Mysore wars, users can have a detailed insight into the land\u00adscape of hold\u00adings that offer sources on the wars from the per\u00adspec\u00adtive of the Han\u00adnover\u00adian reg\u00adi\u00adment that par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00aded in the wars from Ger\u00admany).<a href=\"#_edn1\">[8]<\/a> The objec\u00adtive here is to offer users an exhaus\u00adtive sketch of the archival land\u00adscape in Ger\u00admany on a top\u00adic. Where should one look when work\u00ading on a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar sub\u00adject of inter\u00adest? Which hold\u00adings are rel\u00ade\u00advant and what can they offer? How can these hold\u00adings offer new per\u00adspec\u00adtives for writ\u00ading \u2018oth\u00ader\u2019 and \u2018new\u00ader\u2019 his\u00adto\u00adries, which have been exten\u00adsive\u00adly writ\u00adten about by rely\u00ading on oth\u00ader sources (for exam\u00adple British colo\u00adnial sources in the case of the Mysore Wars)? The <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> Archival Guide will offer a series of posts which will engage with these issues. In doing so, the posts open avenues for new\u00ader research by refer\u00adring to new\u00adly dis\u00adcov\u00adered sources. They there\u00adin aim to evoke the inter\u00adest of users into less\u00ader-explored research areas through the lens of sources in Ger\u00adman hold\u00adings. At the same time, while open\u00ading new sites of research, the posts pro\u00advide read\u00aders with an over\u00adar\u00adch\u00ading syn\u00adop\u00adsis on the \u2018where\u2019, \u2018how-to\u2019 and pos\u00adsi\u00adble \u2018what\u2019 of the theme\u2013 a help\u00adful out\u00adline for how to com\u00admence when con\u00adduct\u00ading research on a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar&nbsp;topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where\u00adas some posts intend to re-open themes which have pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly been exten\u00adsive\u00adly researched (albeit main\u00adly with\u00adin colo\u00adnial archives) through the prism of hold\u00adings housed in Ger\u00adman archives (as men\u00adtioned, the Mysore wars is an illus\u00adtra\u00adtive exam\u00adple of the same), oth\u00aders aim at evok\u00ading inter\u00adest in top\u00adics which have been gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly less explored. These hith\u00ader\u00adto rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly under\u00adex\u00adplored themes can be instruc\u00adtive in two&nbsp;ways\u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(i) They can open <em>new research avenues<\/em> in the his\u00adto\u00adry of Indo-Ger\u00adman entan\u00adgle\u00adments (for exam\u00adple, see the post on the <span class=\"caps\">GDR<\/span> diplo\u00admat Her\u00adbert Fis\u00adch\u00ader in India or the posts on forestry and botany as a site of Indo-Ger\u00adman entan\u00adgle\u00adments) and;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(ii) They can draw our atten\u00adtion to <em>small\u00ader archives and pri\u00advate col\u00adlec\u00adtions<\/em> housed in Ger\u00adman archives, which may offer new insights into these entan\u00adgled his\u00adto\u00adries as well as their accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading entan\u00adgled archives (for exam\u00adple, see the post on the Horst Kr\u00fcger col\u00adlec\u00adtion housed in the archive of the Leib\u00adniz-Zen\u00adtrum Mod\u00adern\u00ader Ori\u00adent, Berlin or the post on the Petra and Joachim Hei\u00addrich col\u00adlec\u00adtions in the same archive).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"guide\"><a id=\"archival-guide-as-a-site\"><\/a>2. Archival Guide as a site for critical engagement with sources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anoth\u00ader objec\u00adtive of the Archival Guide is to reflect on larg\u00ader the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal and method\u00adolog\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtions which arise when engag\u00ading in the seem\u00ading\u00adly banal job of cat\u00ada\u00adlogu\u00ading, describ\u00ading, order\u00ading and index\u00ading. Where\u00adas the guide does aim to show users <em>what <\/em>is to be found in the rich hold\u00adings of Ger\u00adman archives when research\u00ading on themes in mod\u00adern Indi\u00adan his\u00adto\u00adry, we also intend to do so trans\u00adpar\u00adent\u00adly by shar\u00ading the <em>how<\/em> of our own process of cat\u00ada\u00adlogu\u00ading and col\u00adlect\u00ading infor\u00adma\u00adtion on such sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dig\u00adi\u00adtal Turn has enabled the extrac\u00adtion of infor\u00adma\u00adtion from archives and their re-order\u00ading in new\u00ader dig\u00adi\u00adtal archi\u00adtec\u00adtures. Easy access to this new\u00adly ordered infor\u00adma\u00adtion can be high\u00adly ben\u00ade\u00adfi\u00adcial in that it can enable access to a world of new\u00adly dis\u00adcov\u00adered and unex\u00adplored sources, some\u00adtimes even with\u00adout the researcher hav\u00ading to phys\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly vis\u00adit an archive. It can, how\u00adev\u00ader, also de-con\u00adtex\u00adtu\u00adalise infor\u00adma\u00adtion and iso\u00adlate it from where it is phys\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly housed. Full-text search\u00ades often lead to very exact infor\u00adma\u00adtion that usu\u00adal\u00adly belongs to a larg\u00ader archival envi\u00adron\u00adment. The relat\u00aded\u00adness of any two hold\u00adings that have sources on mod\u00adern Indi\u00adan his\u00adto\u00adry may some\u00adtimes not be vis\u00adi\u00adble in these full-text search\u00ades. Such con\u00adtex\u00adtu\u00adal infor\u00adma\u00adtion, which can often be cru\u00adcial for his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans, espe\u00adcial\u00adly when writ\u00ading transna\u00adtion\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adries of entan\u00adgle\u00adments, can be lost in the pre\u00adcise speci\u00adfici\u00adty of search results. The <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> Archival Guide is thus dif\u00adfer\u00adent from con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal archival guides in that it brings such issues to the fore\u00adfront of dis\u00adcus\u00adsion through its essays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giv\u00aden that the data\u00adbase offers users the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty to do full-text search\u00ades and that it also incor\u00adpo\u00adrates a vast cor\u00adpus of key\u00adword index\u00ades (made for each archive enlist\u00aded in the data\u00adbase), the Guide does not intend to repeat these exten\u00adsive lists of key\u00adwords in the form of an open access the\u00adsaurus made avail\u00adable in the guide. A the\u00admat\u00adic orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion of the posts, how\u00adev\u00ader, enables users to get overviews of hold\u00adings on par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar themes. A larg\u00ader over\u00adar\u00adch\u00ading aim is <em>crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly reflect on the results that are to be seen in the data\u00adbase<\/em>. These dis\u00adcus\u00adsions become all the more nec\u00ades\u00adsary in order to avoid the trap of re-enforc\u00ading the writ\u00ading of his\u00adto\u00adries, which may con\u00adform to the insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal and ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adri\u00adal\u00adis\u00ading log\u00adic of exist\u00ading archives. The Guide will address these aspects in two ways out\u00adlined&nbsp;below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"_ednref9\">(i) Method\u00adolog\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly this entails a dis\u00adcus\u00adsion on how the data\u00adbase \u2018dig\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adly\u2019 trans\u00adforms the archi\u00adtec\u00adture of archival hold\u00adings list\u00aded in it. The Glos\u00adsary of Archival and Records Ter\u00admi\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy, pub\u00adlished by the Soci\u00adety of Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Archivists dis\u00adtin\u00adguish\u00ades between two order\u00ading prin\u00adci\u00adples: prove\u00adnance (Provinienz-Prinzip) and per\u00adti\u00adnence (Per\u00adti\u00adnenz-Prinzip). The prin\u00adci\u00adple of prove\u00adnance is defined as \u201c1. The ori\u00adgin or source of some\u00adthing. \u2013 2. Infor\u00adma\u00adtion regard\u00ading the ori\u00adgins, cus\u00adtody, and own\u00ader\u00adship of an item or col\u00adlec\u00adtion\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\">[9]<\/a>. Alter\u00adna\u00adtive\u00adly, \u201c[p]rovenance is a fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal prin\u00adci\u00adple of archives, refer\u00adring to the indi\u00advid\u00adual, fam\u00adi\u00adly, or orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion that cre\u00adat\u00aded or received the items in a col\u00adlec\u00adtion. The prin\u00adci\u00adple of prove\u00adnance or the <em>respect des fonds <\/em>dic\u00adtates that records of dif\u00adfer\u00adent ori\u00adgins (prove\u00adnance) be kept sep\u00ada\u00adrate to pre\u00adserve their con\u00adtext\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\">[10]<\/a>. In con\u00adtrast to this, the oth\u00ader order\u00ading prin\u00adci\u00adple in archival ter\u00admi\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy is the prin\u00adci\u00adple of per\u00adti\u00adnence. The <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> data\u00adbase trans\u00adforms these cat\u00ade\u00adgo\u00adriza\u00adtions accord\u00ading to the prin\u00adci\u00adple of per\u00adti\u00adnence by extract\u00ading such sources and order\u00ading them the\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, with India as the focus.<a href=\"#_edn1\">[12]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the objec\u00adtives of the process of pro\u00adduc\u00ading the data\u00adbase has been to simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly mir\u00adror the archi\u00adtec\u00adture of the archive con\u00adcerned and nonethe\u00adless show\u00adcase the India-spe\u00adcif\u00adic sources in a new sys\u00adtem\u00adatized order. How can this be done effec\u00adtive\u00adly so that the data\u00adbase allows users to view the sources <em>as they exist<\/em> in the con\u00adtext in which they are embed\u00added in the archival struc\u00adture while simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly insert\u00ading them in a new sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adic? The Archival Guide opens a dis\u00adcus\u00adsion on these ques\u00adtions to under\u00adline the method\u00adolog\u00adi\u00adcal impli\u00adca\u00adtions of cat\u00ada\u00adlogu\u00ading India-relat\u00aded hold\u00adings in a new database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(ii) The\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, the Archival Guide is an ever-expand\u00ading site for dis\u00adcus\u00adsions on new research top\u00adics. Where\u00adas numer\u00adous posts high\u00adlight and reflect upon the results already read\u00adi\u00adly view\u00adable in the data\u00adbase (for exam\u00adple the post on Her\u00adbert Fis\u00adch\u00ader, many of whose sources are housed in the hold\u00adings of the Bun\u00adde\u00adsarchiv list\u00aded in the data\u00adbase), new\u00ader the\u00admat\u00adic avenues open par\u00adal\u00adlel to the devel\u00adop\u00adment of the project. Some of the themes, which might not be ade\u00adquate\u00adly rep\u00adre\u00adsent\u00aded in the hold\u00adings list\u00aded in the data\u00adbase, can nev\u00ader\u00adthe\u00adless be cov\u00adered by posts writ\u00adten for the Archival Guide by experts on such spe\u00adcif\u00adic research top\u00adics. This is a strat\u00ade\u00adgy neces\u00adsi\u00adtat\u00aded by the aware\u00adness that, owing to lim\u00adit\u00aded man\u00adpow\u00ader, not all India relat\u00aded hold\u00adings in all Ger\u00adman archives can be enlist\u00aded in a peri\u00adod of twelve years with\u00adin the data\u00adbase. The Archival Guide will thus be an open plat\u00adform which will invite exter\u00adnal schol\u00adars for con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions on their area of exper\u00adtise. This will there\u00adin make it pos\u00adsi\u00adble to have posts which give overviews of Ger\u00adman archival hold\u00adings on themes not cov\u00adered by the data\u00adbase and, simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly, mark the begin\u00adning of exchange with a larg\u00ader com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty of his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans of South&nbsp;Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(iii) The\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly our con\u00adcerns relate to how a project like <span class=\"caps\">MIDA<\/span> can cre\u00adate a new struc\u00adture of meta\u00adda\u00adta that cuts across the insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal and ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal log\u00adic of exist\u00ading archives and, at the same time, avoids, replac\u00ading this log\u00adic with an equal\u00adly nar\u00adrow and ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adry-bound bilat\u00ader\u00adal \u2018Indo-Ger\u00adman\u2019 log\u00adic? Which for\u00admats of find\u00ading aids are required for cre\u00adat\u00ading transna\u00adtion\u00adal research facil\u00adi\u00adties in the con\u00adtext of such a project so as to over\u00adcome the false sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion of the \u2018tech\u00adni\u00adcal\u2019 and the \u2018sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic\u2019? The Archival Guide aims to address these ques\u00adtions through a range of crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly engag\u00ading posts.
