In this brief post, I exam\u00adine some archival sources per\u00adtain\u00ading to South Asian stu\u00addents to make a case for entan\u00adgling archives of edu\u00adca\u00adtion\u00adal insti\u00adtu\u00adtions with the per\u00adson\u00adal bio\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal affec\u00adtive archives to explore cre\u00adative intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal entan\u00adgle\u00adments. My focus will be on South Asian Mus\u00adlim stu\u00addents whom we encounter both in insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal archives as well as in rich affec\u00adtive bio\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal accounts left behind by&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Humboldt-Universit\u00e4t\u2019s<\/em> archival col\u00adlec\u00adtion is under\u00adgo\u00ading dig\u00adi\u00adti\u00adza\u00adtion and is now search\u00adable through find\u00ading aids and online archival data search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archiv-hu-berlin.findbuch.net\/php\/main.php?ar_id=3775\">https:\/\/www.archiv-hu berlin.findbuch.net <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How\u00adev\u00ader, the gener\u00adic key\u00adword search on India and Indi\u00adans is not very fruit\u00adful. It is bet\u00adter to use the Ger\u00adman key\u00adword <em>Aus\u00adl\u00e4n\u00adder<\/em> as well as <em>Indien\/Inder\/indisch<\/em>. A search con\u00adduct\u00aded with these key\u00adwords leads to gen\u00ader\u00adal results and not spe\u00adcif\u00adic ones. How\u00adev\u00ader, doc\u00adu\u00adments on indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals can be accessed if ade\u00adquate details like full name and year of study are pro\u00advid\u00aded to archivists. I was able to find infor\u00adma\u00adtion about Indi\u00adan stu\u00addents in an un-cat\u00ada\u00adlogued selec\u00adtion of cards <em>Aus\u00adl\u00e4n\u00adderkartei Indi\u00aden<\/em>, 1928\u20131938, The Hum\u00adboldt-<em>Uni\u00adver\u00adsit\u00e4t<\/em> zu Berlin archive. The archivist pro\u00advid\u00aded me with stu\u00addent cards that have been assem\u00adbled pri\u00ador to the dig\u00adi\u00adti\u00adza\u00adtion project. These enroll\u00adment cards are the most impor\u00adtant source of infor\u00adma\u00adtion, espe\u00adcial\u00adly about Indi\u00adan stu\u00addents who reg\u00adis\u00adtered with the <em>Deutsches Insti\u00adtut f\u00fcr Aus\u00adl\u00e4n\u00adder <\/em>(Ger\u00adman Insti\u00adtute for For\u00adeign\u00aders) for study-relat\u00aded issues, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly Ger\u00adman lan\u00adguage-learn\u00ading (See appen\u00addix for the full list). Fur\u00adther, doc\u00adu\u00adments on doc\u00adtor\u00adal stu\u00addents can also be found through an index search of the fac\u00adul\u00adty and depart\u00adments records if full names and the year(s) of study are known. The cards also reveal the names of their local hosts and their res\u00adi\u00adden\u00adtial address\u00ades, giv\u00ading a sense of the lives of Indi\u00adans in Berlin. Pho\u00adto\u00adgraph by author.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I also con\u00adsult\u00aded the copies of the Institute\u2019s mag\u00ada\u00adzine, which pro\u00advides fur\u00adther details about the social, cul\u00adtur\u00adal and intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal life of inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal stu\u00addents in Berlin. <em>Hin\u00addus\u00adtan Haus<\/em> was spon\u00adsored by the Ger\u00adman Insti\u00adtute for For\u00adeign\u00aders at Berlin Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty. The insti\u00adtute also estab\u00adlished the <em>Hegel Haus<\/em> for inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal stu\u00addent hous\u00ading; pro\u00advid\u00aded Ger\u00adman lan\u00adguage cours\u00ades and cul\u00adtur\u00adal activ\u00adi\u00adties for for\u00adeign\u00aders; and pub\u00adlished a mag\u00ada\u00adzine that reflect\u00aded stu\u00addent views and chron\u00adi\u00adcled their expe\u00adri\u00adences. These instances of insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal inter\u00adac\u00adtions for and of Indi\u00adan stu\u00addents have been archived and doc\u00adu\u00adment\u00aded at the Hum\u00adboldt Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty archives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Hegel Haus<\/em> was locat\u00aded in the cen\u00adter of Berlin<em> Am Kupfer\u00adgraben<\/em> 4a, close to the uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty cam\u00adpus. Its urban loca\u00adtion and char\u00adac\u00adter allowed for\u00adeign stu\u00addents to get acquaint\u00aded with Ger\u00adman lan\u00adguage and cul\u00adture as quick\u00adly as pos\u00adsi\u00adble. It offered accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtion and food to the guests and pro\u00advid\u00aded ser\u00advices that facil\u00adi\u00adtat\u00aded ori\u00aden\u00adta\u00adtion in the city. Among the ten\u00adants were also Ger\u00adman stu\u00addents, who vol\u00adun\u00adteered to host the for\u00adeign stu\u00addents. The house had 50 rooms, a gar\u00adden, and a din\u00ading room. Numer\u00adous com\u00admu\u00adnal and social rooms, such as lec\u00adture halls, games\u2019 rooms, read\u00ading rooms and a library were avail\u00adable on the premis\u00ades. The sports hall and the baths were spa\u00adcious. The rent for the rooms with full board, light and heat\u00ading ranged between 125 and 160 <span class=\"caps\">RM<\/span> month\u00adly. Indi\u00adan stu\u00addents like Bhaira\u00adva Nath Rohat\u00adgi, Hem Raj Anand and Arjun K. Patel lived at the <em>Hegel Haus Am Kupfer\u00adgraben<\/em>. Beyond the Hegel Haus, man\u00adaged by the Friedrich-Wil\u00adhelms-Uni\u00adver\u00adsit\u00e4t zu Berlin, inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal stu\u00addents also inhab\u00adit\u00aded oth\u00ader parts of the city such as the mid\u00addle class cos\u00admopoli\u00adtan parts of Char\u00adlot\u00adten\u00adburg as well as more afford\u00adable work\u00ading class neigh\u00adbor\u00adhoods of Wed\u00adding and Moabit.<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[2]<\/a> Details of indi\u00advid\u00adual stu\u00addents and their social and pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal life can be gleaned from this list as well as from the images of the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty mag\u00ada\u00adzine col\u00adlec\u00adtion. Mov\u00ading beyond insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal archival tax\u00adonomies affords an enlarged view of per\u00adson\u00adal and pub\u00adlic his\u00adto\u00adries that are char\u00adac\u00adterised by felt expe\u00adri\u00adence and emo\u00adtions. They are one exam\u00adple of what one may call \u201caffec\u00adtive archives\u201d of expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading and nar\u00adrat\u00ading his\u00adto\u00adry. Human lives and per\u00adson\u00adal and pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal rela\u00adtions define these his\u00adto\u00adries. Emo\u00adtions and feel\u00adings give tex\u00adture to these affec\u00adtive archives. They pro\u00adduce their own affec\u00adtive tem\u00adpo\u00adral\u00adi\u00adties, geo\u00adgra\u00adphies and, thus, his\u00adto\u00adries. Auto\u00adbi\u00ado\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal sources pro\u00advide a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly rich archive to under\u00adstand the many entan\u00adgle\u00adments, per\u00adson\u00adal and pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal, knit\u00adted between South Asian Mus\u00adlim stu\u00addents and Ger\u00adman intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals in the twen\u00adti\u00adeth cen\u00adtu\u00adry. I shall attempt to give a sense of these affec\u00adtive his\u00adto\u00adries by con\u00adnect\u00ading Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty archives as well as per\u00adson\u00adal affec\u00adtive archives in the form of auto\u00adbi\u00ado\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture pro\u00adduced by South Asian Mus\u00adlim intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals and through their rela\u00adtion\u00adships and net\u00adworks in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ann Cvetkovich has writ\u00adten insight\u00adful\u00adly about what she calls the \u201carchive of feel\u00adings\u201d that incor\u00adpo\u00adrates not just pub\u00adlic facts but also per\u00adson\u00adal mem\u00ado\u00adries chron\u00adi\u00adcled through oral and video tes\u00adti\u00admonies, mem\u00adoirs, let\u00adters and jour\u00adnals. She elab\u00ado\u00adrates that the archive of feel\u00adings is also \u201cembed\u00added not just in nar\u00adra\u00adtive but in mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal arti\u00adfacts which can range from pho\u00adtographs to objects.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[3]<\/a> Cvetkovich has also reflect\u00aded on the larg\u00ader ques\u00adtion of archive and his\u00adto\u00adry writ\u00ading to call for \u201d[a] rad\u00adi\u00adcal archive of emo\u00adtion in order to doc\u00adu\u00adment inti\u00adma\u00adcy, sex\u00adu\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty, love and activism \u2013 all areas of expe\u00adri\u00adence that are dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to chron\u00adi\u00adcle through the mate\u00adri\u00adals of tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal archive.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[4]<\/a> Kris Man\u00adjapra notes the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties of and prob\u00adlems in writ\u00ading entan\u00adgled his\u00adto\u00adries of South Asian intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals in Ger\u00admany: \u201cThe archives are less detailed, but the affec\u00adtive bonds of polit\u00adi\u00adcal, social and intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal entan\u00adgle\u00adments between Ger\u00admans and Indi\u00adans in the war years is still obvi\u00adous.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn5\">[5]<\/a> Indo-Ger\u00adman con\u00adnec\u00adtions were forged and sus\u00adtained both in reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal con\u00adtexts but also in affec\u00adtive per\u00adson\u00adal ways. I explore these affec\u00adtive his\u00adto\u00adries and archives by look\u00ading at insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal con\u00adnec\u00adtions between Indi\u00adan Mus\u00adlim intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals and their Ger\u00adman coun\u00adter\u00adparts in the uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty con\u00adtext and by illu\u00admi\u00adnat\u00ading per\u00adson\u00adal rela\u00adtions and friend\u00adships ini\u00adti\u00adat\u00aded through their inter\u00adac\u00adtions as teach\u00aders and stu\u00addents that led to their evo\u00adlu\u00adtion as intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal inter\u00adlocu\u00adtors and innovators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adized doc\u00adu\u00adments can be con\u00adnect\u00aded with the affec\u00adtive archives con\u00adsti\u00adtut\u00aded by auto\u00adbi\u00ado\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal writ\u00adings of lived expe\u00adri\u00adences, felt emo\u00adtions and mem\u00ado\u00adries as nar\u00adrat\u00aded by South Asian stu\u00addents and vis\u00adi\u00adtors to Berlin. The stu\u00addent cards reveal the diver\u00adsi\u00adty of reli\u00adgion, schol\u00adar\u00adly inter\u00adests and social loca\u00adtion of South Asian stu\u00addents. My focus here is on Mus\u00adlim stu\u00addents due to the avail\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty of archival sources in both insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal and per\u00adson\u00adal archives. How\u00adev\u00ader, this post also shows that \u201cSouth Asian Mus\u00adlims\u201d were not a homoge\u00adnous cat\u00ade\u00adgo\u00adry and were dis\u00adtrib\u00aduted across polit\u00adi\u00adcal, cul\u00adtur\u00adal and intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal axes that con\u00adnect\u00aded them with oth\u00ader Ger\u00adman and transna\u00adtion\u00adal actors and&nbsp;ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The every\u00adday stu\u00addent life in inter\u00adwar Berlin is vivid\u00adly described in the writ\u00adings of Sayyid Abid Husain, Muham\u00admad Mujeeb and Khwa\u00adja Abdul Hamied.<a href=\"#_edn6\" name=\"_ednref6\">[6]<\/a> These attest to the fact that there was a notice\u00adable and live\u00adly South Asian stu\u00addent com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty in 1920s Berlin.<a href=\"#_edn7\" name=\"_ednref7\">[7]<\/a> Even Mirza Azeez, the Imam of the local mosque in Lahore, was study\u00ading chem\u00adistry in Berlin. He lived in the Ahmadiyya Mosque at Bri\u00aden\u00adner Stra\u00dfe 7\/8, Wilmers\u00addorf in 1932.<a href=\"#_edn8\" name=\"_ednref8\">[8]<\/a> Not unlike our own times, the typ\u00adi\u00adcal stu\u00addent life was marked by a strug\u00adgle to find cheap accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtions. There were also stu\u00addent gath\u00ader\u00adings and New Year par\u00adties.<a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\">[9]<\/a> Indi\u00adan stu\u00addents also inter\u00adact\u00aded with oth\u00ader stu\u00addent net\u00adworks like the Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion of Stu\u00addents for Cen\u00adtral Europe in Berlin.<a href=\"#_edn10\" name=\"_ednref10\">[10]<\/a> Abdul Sat\u00adtar Kheiri and Abdul Jab\u00adbar Kheiri were well known as \u201cPan-Islamists\u201d with\u00adin the Indi\u00adan cir\u00adcles. Habibur Rah\u00adman was one of the main fig\u00adures of the Indi\u00adan Mus\u00adlim com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty as part of the \u201cJami\u00adat al-Mus\u00adlimeen in Berlin\u201d (Islamis\u00adche Gemeinde Berlin). There were also rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion\u00adar\u00adies among the stu\u00addents like Maulana Barkat Ali.<a href=\"#_edn11\" name=\"_ednref11\">[11]<\/a> Viren\u00addranath Chat\u00adtopad\u00adhyay House was the cen\u00adter that brought togeth\u00ader what schol\u00adars have clas\u00adsi\u00adfied as \u201crev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion\u00adary Indi\u00adans,\u201d \u201cIndi\u00adan Stu\u00addents\u201d and \u201coffi\u00adcial cir\u00adcles\u201d at house gath\u00ader\u00adings. We get a vivid account from auto\u00adbi\u00ado\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal writ\u00adings about the every\u00adday strug\u00adgles of stu\u00addent life, includ\u00ading the strug\u00adgle to pick up Ger\u00adman at the state school of for\u00adeign lan\u00adguages or find\u00ading part\u00adners for prac\u00adtic\u00ading the lan\u00adguage. Hamied also met Tara Chand Roy \u2013 the Hin\u00addus\u00adtani teacher at the for\u00adeign lan\u00adguages school.<a href=\"#_edn12\" name=\"_ednref12\">[12]<\/a> He enrolled for a PhD in chem\u00adistry with Prof. Arthur Rosen\u00adheim. With Prof. Eduard Spranger, the exam\u00adin\u00ader of his <em>Ver\u00adstand<\/em> exam, he found intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal affil\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtions through his work on the phi\u00adlos\u00ado\u00adphy of under\u00adstand\u00ading.<a href=\"#_edn13\" name=\"_ednref13\">[13]<\/a> He also became close to the renowned chem\u00adistry pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Prof. Walther Nernst, Nobel Prize win\u00adner Prof. Fritz Haber as well as Prof. Buden\u00adstein and Prof. Fre\u00adundlich. Prof. Buden\u00adstein took his stu\u00addents to man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading units while Prof. Ratheim intro\u00adduced Hamied to the indus\u00adtri\u00adal soap and per\u00adfume fac\u00adto\u00adry of Dr. Schle\u00adich, where Hamied even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly interned and acquired first-hand expe\u00adri\u00adence in chem\u00adistry. This had a foun\u00adda\u00adtion\u00adal influ\u00adence on Hamied\u2019s future career choice.<a href=\"#_edn14\" name=\"_ednref14\">[14]<\/a> Apart from pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal work expe\u00adri\u00adence, Hamied also shared fond mem\u00ado\u00adries of pic\u00adnics and Christ\u00admas par\u00adties orga\u00adnized by Prof. Rosen\u00adheim. The recep\u00adtion par\u00adties on grad\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion brought stu\u00addents and pro\u00adfes\u00adsors togeth\u00ader at the Hotel Bris\u00adtol at Unter den Lin\u00adden.<a href=\"#_edn15\" name=\"_ednref15\">[15]<\/a> The con\u00adnec\u00adtions forged with pro\u00adfes\u00adsors sur\u00advived after the com\u00adple\u00adtion of for\u00admal stud\u00adies. Hamied became an assis\u00adtant to his teacher Prof. Volmer and through him got pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal train\u00ading in the school of phar\u00adma\u00adcy and the lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry of Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor. These includ\u00aded East\u00ader hol\u00adi\u00adday gath\u00ader\u00adings or sum\u00admer pic\u00adnics at Span\u00addau lakes where Hamied encoun\u00adtered his future love Lubow Der\u00adchan\u00ads\u00adka, a young Pol\u00adish com\u00admu\u00adnist Jew of Lithuan\u00adian descent.<a href=\"#_edn17\" name=\"_ednref17\">[17]<\/a> Through Lubow, he dis\u00adcov\u00adered and also inter\u00adact\u00aded with the larg\u00ader net\u00adworks of Russ\u00adian and Jew\u00adish Com\u00admu\u00adnist lead\u00aders who fre\u00adquent\u00aded Berlin at the Rot\u00ader Klub (Red club).<a href=\"#_edn18\" name=\"_ednref18\">[18]<\/a> The Mus\u00adlim-Jew\u00adish romance blos\u00adsomed and on June, 1928 Hamied mar\u00adried Lubow in the Berlin mosque.
