Translo\u00adcal affect and affil\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtion among radio broad\u00adcast\u00aders and lis\u00adten\u00aders of Ger\u00adman inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal radio sta\u00adtions in Cold War India, 1964\u20131990\u201d inves\u00adti\u00adgates the mutu\u00adal entan\u00adgle\u00adments of the cul\u00adtur\u00adal, polit\u00adi\u00adcal, and affec\u00adtive radio\u00adphon\u00adic reper\u00adtoires devised by the two icon\u00adic Ger\u00adman inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal broad\u00adcast\u00ading ser\u00advices, Radio Berlin Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal <\/em>from the Ger\u00adman Demo\u00adc\u00adra\u00adt\u00adic Repub\u00adlic (GDR<\/span>) and Deutsche Welle <\/em>from the Fed\u00ader\u00adal Repub\u00adlic of Ger\u00admany (FRG<\/span>), dur\u00ading the Cold War years in India. Rather than lim\u00adit\u00ading these entwined, often com\u00adpet\u00ading, tra\u00adjec\u00adto\u00adries of the two radio sta\u00adtions to a reduc\u00adtive com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson, the Indi\u00adan per\u00adspec\u00adtive promis\u00ades to reveal their com\u00adplex his\u00adto\u00adries as entan\u00adgled and over\u00adlap\u00adping. How did India become a site for son\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly map\u00adping Cold War affil\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtions, and how did Indi\u00adan actors respond to, prof\u00adi\u00adteer from, and even co-shape inter-Ger\u00adman com\u00adpet\u00adi\u00adtive acoustic pres\u00adences in the transna\u00adtion\u00adal space of radio broad\u00adcasts? The project probes into the inter\u00adsti\u00adtial affec\u00adtive spaces made of voic\u00ades, ears and postal feed\u00adback, between the micro\u00adphones in Bonn and East Berlin and local radio sets in India. It traces the translo\u00adcal tra\u00adjec\u00adto\u00adries of entan\u00adgle\u00adments among actors from the GDR<\/span>, FRG<\/span> and India and how short waves trig\u00adgered the imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion of lis\u00adten\u00aders in sub-urban\/rur\u00adal India to per\u00adform lived local inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adalisms. Radio fan clubs thus insert\u00aded them\u00adselves in the wider glob\u00adal pol\u00adi\u00adtics of a Cold War-torn world by stag\u00ading sol\u00adi\u00addar\u00adi\u00adty with one or the oth\u00ader voice in the Cold War. The project is inter\u00addis\u00adci\u00adpli\u00adnary in dif\u00adfer\u00adent regards: it mobilis\u00ades both his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal and anthro\u00adpo\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal meth\u00adods includ\u00ading archival, oral his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal and ethno\u00adgraph\u00adic research. It thus promis\u00ades to com\u00adbine and engage with the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal debates from the fields of Cold War his\u00adto\u00adry, the his\u00adto\u00adry of emo\u00adtions and a his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal anthro\u00adpol\u00ado\u00adgy of mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
