After study\u00ading M.A. Phi\u00adlos\u00ado\u00adphy and B.A. Region\u00adal Stud\u00adies Asia\/Africa at the Hum\u00adboldt-Uni\u00adver\u00adsit\u00e4t zu Berlin and work\u00ading as a stu\u00addent assis\u00adtant for the Chair of \u2018Cul\u00adtures and Soci\u00adeties of South Asia\u2019 and the MIDA<\/span> project, I have been work\u00ading as a research fel\u00adlow for the MIDA<\/span> project since April 2024. This includes main\u00adtain\u00ading the web\u00adsite, organ\u00adis\u00ading work\u00adshops and con\u00adfer\u00adences, as well as edi\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal work on the pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion of Archival Reflex\u00adi\u00adcon arti\u00adcles and the\u00admat\u00adic resources. With\u00adin the project I am inter\u00adest\u00aded in the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between affect, atmos\u00adphere and pow\u00ader in archives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addi\u00adtion, I am research\u00ading the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between affect and vio\u00adlence in colo\u00adnial Ben\u00adgal after 1756 as part of my dis\u00adser\u00adta\u00adtion project, which began in July 2024. I would like to explore this rela\u00adtion\u00adship using the con\u00adcept of an atmos\u00adphere of vio\u00adlence in order to shift the focus from war\u00adlike con\u00adflicts to every\u00adday forms of vio\u00adlence or even a gen\u00ader\u00adal ten\u00adsion that favoured violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dissertation: State of Tranquillity? Affect, Atmosphere and Violence in Early Colonial Bengal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

My dis\u00adser\u00adta\u00adtion aims to enrich the cur\u00adrent research on the nexus of affect, anx\u00adi\u00adety and vio\u00adlence in colo\u00adnial India. I seek to answer the ques\u00adtions of how dif\u00adfer\u00adent affects were entan\u00adgled in ear\u00adly colo\u00adnial Ben\u00adgal, how these affects were lived and mate\u00adri\u00adalised in the socio-phys\u00adi\u00adcal space, and how these mate\u00adri\u00adalised affects enabled and facil\u00adi\u00adtat\u00aded the use of vio\u00adlence. Through these ques\u00adtions, I hope not only to offer a cor\u00adrec\u00adtive to the roman\u00adti\u00adcised his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal accounts of the British Empire, but also to con\u00adtribute to the ongo\u00ading debate on colo\u00adnial vio\u00adlence by demon\u00adstrat\u00ading the impor\u00adtance of atmos\u00adpher\u00adic prac\u00adtices as pre\u00adcon\u00addi\u00adtions for vio\u00adlent action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I explore the nexus in the begin\u00adning of colo\u00adnial Ben\u00adgal, from 1756 to 1793, when the East India Com\u00adpa\u00adny rose from a trad\u00ading com\u00adpa\u00adny to become the local ruler of Ben\u00adgal. This ascen\u00addan\u00adcy sparked debates about sov\u00ader\u00adeign\u00adty, tax\u00ada\u00adtion, or jurispru\u00addence and changed the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between the British and the local pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion. This was accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by an affec\u00adtive reor\u00adgan\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtion char\u00adac\u00adterised by a slow shift from a flu\u00adid and inter\u00adac\u00adtive rela\u00adtion\u00adship between the Com\u00adpa\u00adny offi\u00adcials and local inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adaries to a more dis\u00adtant, scep\u00adti\u00adcal, sus\u00adpi\u00adcious and racialised one. Although this tran\u00adsi\u00adtion\u00adal and trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtive peri\u00adod has been exten\u00adsive\u00adly researched, the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between affect and vio\u00adlence has been understudied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dur\u00ading this peri\u00adod, I will first seek a deep\u00ader under\u00adstand\u00ading of the over\u00adall affec\u00adtive land\u00adscape<\/em> of the British and how it has changed over these years, dis\u00aden\u00adtan\u00adgling the clus\u00adter of anx\u00adi\u00adety, fear, and angst<\/em> and under\u00adstand\u00ading their con\u00adnec\u00adtions with oth\u00ader affects. Rather than focus\u00ading on one affect or one social group, I analyse the affec\u00adtive land\u00adscape as mul\u00adti-lay\u00adered, with dif\u00adfer\u00adent affects con\u00adflict\u00ading or con\u00adverg\u00ading, damp\u00aden\u00ading or ampli\u00adfy\u00ading each oth\u00ader. For exam\u00adple, the anx\u00adious state of gen\u00ader\u00adals, con\u00adstant\u00adly antic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00ading an unknown and dif\u00adfuse threat, is fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly dif\u00adfer\u00adent from that of civ\u00adil ser\u00advants strug\u00adgling with sense-mak\u00ading. More\u00adover, fear and anx\u00adi\u00adety as affects are not eas\u00adi\u00adly sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adble from oth\u00ader affects such as love, affec\u00adtion or sad\u00adness. Only this com\u00adplex of dif\u00adfer\u00adent, inter\u00admixed affects, I argue, can ade\u00adquate\u00adly cap\u00adture the vio\u00adlent nature of the British Empire in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sec\u00adond\u00adly, I focus on affect as a rela\u00adtion between bod\u00adies and things that inhab\u00adit and shape socio-phys\u00adi\u00adcal space. While the lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture on anx\u00adi\u00adety tends to focus on dis\u00adcur\u00adsive prac\u00adtices such as media cov\u00ader\u00adage of events and their fram\u00ading, I pay atten\u00adtion to spa\u00adtial prac\u00adtices and how affect is embed\u00added in phys\u00adi\u00adcal space. Through the notion of atmos\u00adphere, I trace the phys\u00adi\u00adcal mate\u00adri\u00adal\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtions of affect and how the affec\u00adtive lives of indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals are both expressed through and shaped by the spaces they inhab\u00adit. Archi\u00adtec\u00adture or spa\u00adtial rit\u00adu\u00adals are then seen as affec\u00adtive prac\u00adtices that cre\u00adate and change an atmos\u00adphere. The British cre\u00adat\u00aded or appro\u00adpri\u00adat\u00aded spe\u00adcif\u00adic spaces and rit\u00adu\u00adals in order to feel at home or to cre\u00adate an atmos\u00adphere of secu\u00adri\u00adty and homeliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final\u00adly, I want to con\u00adsid\u00ader how British atmos\u00adpher\u00adic prac\u00adtices cre\u00adat\u00aded the con\u00addi\u00adtions for colo\u00adnial vio\u00adlence to flour\u00adish in every\u00adday inter\u00adac\u00adtions as well as in extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary excess\u00ades. I argue that vio\u00adlence is enabled by the change of atmos\u00adphere. By shap\u00ading the socio-phys\u00adi\u00adcal space, the British cre\u00adat\u00aded an atmos\u00adphere of ten\u00adsion that facil\u00adi\u00adtat\u00aded vio\u00adlence. The prac\u00adtices they used to reduce or coun\u00adter\u00adact their anx\u00adi\u00adety were always already accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by a con\u00adfronta\u00adtion with that anx\u00adi\u00adety there\u00adby rein\u00adforc\u00ading it. By attempt\u00ading to cre\u00adate British spaces in a for\u00adeign place, the strange\u00adness of that place was made all the more strik\u00ading and intim\u00adi\u00addat\u00ading, while at the same time their dis\u00adplay of pow\u00ader reas\u00adsured the British sub\u00adjects, low\u00ader\u00ading the thresh\u00adold for the exer\u00adcise of violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
