Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Karl M\u00fcller-Bahlke has been work\u00ading as a research fel\u00adlow for the MIDA<\/span> Project since 2025. He holds an M.A. in Labour in Soci\u00adety from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of G\u00f6t\u00adtin\u00adgen, as well as a dual B.A. in Mod\u00adern Indi\u00adan Stud\u00adies<\/em> and Polit\u00adi\u00adcal Sci\u00adence<\/em>. At this time, his aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic work focused on labor and indus\u00adtri\u00adal pol\u00adi\u00adcy in colo\u00adnial India, with a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar inter\u00adest in the sta\u00adtis\u00adti\u00adcal doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion of work\u00ading and liv\u00ading con\u00addi\u00adtions. He also worked as a stu\u00addent assis\u00adtant in the MIDA<\/span> project dur\u00ading this period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2022 to 2025, he served as the fed\u00ader\u00adal chair of SJD<\/span>\u2013Die Falken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research Focus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

His research focus\u00ades on Ger\u00adman-Indi\u00adan eco\u00adnom\u00adic and labor his\u00adto\u00adry in the 1950s and 1960s, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly in the field of heavy indus\u00adtry. At the cen\u00adter of his dis\u00adser\u00adta\u00adtion project is the Rourkela steel plant, a coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion between West Ger\u00adman indus\u00adtri\u00adal enter\u00adpris\u00ades and the Indi\u00adan state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The imme\u00addi\u00adate post\u00adwar years occu\u00adpy an impor\u00adtant place in the his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00adscious\u00adness of both Ger\u00adman and Indi\u00adan soci\u00adety, espe\u00adcial\u00adly from an eco\u00adnom\u00adic per\u00adspec\u00adtive: both the Fed\u00ader\u00adal Republic\u2019s \u201ceco\u00adnom\u00adic mir\u00ada\u00adcle\u201d and Nehru\u00advian devel\u00adop\u00adment pol\u00adi\u00adcy con\u00adtin\u00adue to shape how the found\u00ading years of the two states are viewed. At the same time, eco\u00adnom\u00adic devel\u00adop\u00adments dur\u00ading this peri\u00adod unfold\u00aded large\u00adly in the con\u00adtext of the ear\u00adly stages of both British decoloni\u00adsa\u00adtion and the Cold War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The steel indus\u00adtry in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar, as a strate\u00adgic sec\u00adtor, stood at the fore\u00adfront of polit\u00adi\u00adcal atten\u00adtion. How\u00adev\u00ader, nei\u00adther the strate\u00adgies, inter\u00adests, and actions of the com\u00adpa\u00adnies involved, nor those of their organ\u00adised and unor\u00adgan\u00adised work\u00adforces and their rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtives, can be reduced to state inter\u00adests. The dis\u00adser\u00adta\u00adtion project exam\u00adines the result\u00ading fields of tension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
