Das moderne Indien in deutschen Archiven

Michael Mann studied Modern South Asian History, Indology and German Literature at Heidelberg University receiving his M.A. in Modern History and South Asian History in 1989. Prof. Dr Dietmar Rothermund, South Asia Institute of Heidelberg University, supervised his PhD-thesis on the agrarian transformation of northern India at the beginning of British colonial rule which Michael Mann completed in 1992. From this year to 2005 he was employed as assistant professor at the FernUniversität in Hagen (Germany’s open university) where he completed his second thesis (monography) on the early British colonial state in Bengal. Michael Mann took part in a couple of research projects, one on historiographical representations of South Asia in modern times and the second one on telegraphy and the public sphere in British India. Since April 2010 he is Professor for Society and Culture of South Asia at Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin.
